'Skinny jeans are dying out'???

Whatdoyouexpect · 02/12/2019 12:21

Is this true?

If so, I'm just wondering what I should wear instead - I don't mind dresses and skirts but it's freezing!

What do I wear instead?

My skinnies are only for wet weather these days.

I'm relieved that looser "mom" jeans are in. I can even cope with the slightly chilly ankles that come with them.

jbfletcher1 · 02/12/2019 18:48

The high street shops have being trying to get us to move on from the skinny shape for yrs now but they are quite practical particularly in Winter.

BlackSwan · 02/12/2019 18:54

I'll be pleased when the fashion for mens' skinny jeans dies out. It's weird.

GoGoLego · 02/12/2019 18:59

Yes finally. Sorry but my thighs do not look good in skinny jeans. And it's so hard to find normal bootleg jeans because of this stupid fashion

Floisme · 02/12/2019 19:03

I don't even think skinnies are that practical in bad weather. In heavy rain they stick to my legs from the knee down and stay damp for ages. The funny thing is, I'd stopped noticing this until I switched back to a straight leg this winter.

jbfletcher1 · 02/12/2019 19:06

It depends on footwear, eg long boots/snow boots can look better over the jean.

HundredMilesAnHour · 02/12/2019 19:47

I haven't seen anyone wearing skinny jeans for several years. But I live in hipster central.

I wear men's jeans. Hand made by a craft jeans maker. Free repairs for life. Buy well, buy once. Japanese selvedge. It's all been about raw denim and the 'fades' for the last few years. That's the vibe where I live, apart from students who maybe can't afford raw denim so they wear mom jeans.

This thread has made me laugh so much, thanks everyone! I needed cheering up. FWIW I love my skinnies and they really suit me, so I'm sticking with what is flattering. I love love the big baggies but they look disasterous on me, so vanity wins over fashion for me on this one Wink

Silenttype · 02/12/2019 20:14

I work for a women's retailer and skinny jeans are by far the most popular. 'Mom' jeans are becoming more popular, but I think skinnies will always be around!

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 02/12/2019 20:18

I only have one pair of jeans. They’re skinny and they’ll be my jeans until they wear out. Grin

lindyloo57 · 02/12/2019 21:10

I would love to find another style of Jean's which would suit me, I am 5 ft 2 size 10 with no bum, i have tried so many straight styles but they never look right on me, i like the fit to be fitted on bum and thigh like skinnies are,

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/12/2019 21:18

I took a load of skinny jeans to the charity shop last year, but kept one pair back “just in case”. They have never been worn since. I wear either “barrel leg” jeans, or Levi’s 501s, and currently making a feature of socks - stripy, glittery, patterned or whatever.

That said, I teach, and a lot of female students are still in skinny jeans - high waisted ones as pp said. A lot are also wearing mom style, and wide-leg crops, either with or without socks.

HelloDulling · 02/12/2019 21:25

I haven’t worn jeans for years. Today I wore wideleg wool trousers with lace up ankle boots. Yesterday I wore thick knitted culottes with tights and shoes.

To my eye, skinnies look awful, and I also find them very uncomfortable.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 02/12/2019 21:27

The only thing skinnies are good for us in the winter with boots. Otherwise I look like a carrot. I can't wait to get back into my bootcut jeans Grin

LauraEssence · 03/12/2019 07:42

Jeans are still fashionable and skinny jeans are still fine but I think there's a lot of hype around straight cut jeans and mom jeans

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 03/12/2019 07:50

Where do I get these fleecy warm leggings?

Brillopadtongue · 03/12/2019 07:57

I dont want cold stomach and ankles or huge wide jeans, micro glasses and stripper/rap video look, so i just do me. I am so unfashionable and i couldnt give a fuck.

AuntieStella · 03/12/2019 08:02

Fleecy warm leggings give the same silhouette as skinnies, as does the running tights type of sports wear. So close fitting on the legs is likely to continue to look 'right'.

MikeUniformMike · 03/12/2019 08:41

@Message posterIveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying, You'll find fleecy lined leggings in Primark.
I haven't tried them.
I imagine that other shops sell them too.

Musicforsnorks · 03/12/2019 08:50

People are so unfathomably desperate to conform, it’s like watching a psychological experiment unfold in these forums sometimes.

CointreauVersial · 03/12/2019 09:09

As people have said, skinnies remain popular, and the shops are still full of them, however, the "now" jeans shape is looser on the leg (straight, mom or wide leg), and more anklegrazing. More emphasis on the waist (i.e. the "half tuck"). Waists are a lot higher than they used to be, so one thing that does look dated is skinnies with a low/mid rise.

A couple of years ago, the fashion police tried to persuade us that flares were back, but no-one bought that one! Skinnies will be around for a while yet.

BeatriceTheBeast · 03/12/2019 12:11

It's fine to say you just "do you" hun, but I remember when nobody wore skinny jeans and I mean nobody. Why did everyone start "doing themselves" that sounds a bit wrong by wearing skinnies? Youd be surprised how influenced by fashion you probably are. Very few people are immune.

Best to follow it only as far as suits you though and in line with your views on ethics etc though.

Drabarni · 03/12/2019 12:17

skinnies are still very much in fashion in all the shops anyway.
I wish they weren't as my 15 year old wears them and it isn't a good look on her. But you have to let them work it out for themselves.

What jeans are in fashion then? I honestly only see skinnies.

twosoups1972 · 03/12/2019 12:22

I used to wear a lot of skinnies but have been experimenting with other styles recently. I love my Gap straight leg jeans and they balance out my top heavy figure. I've also recently bought 'relaxed skinny' jeans from Next - sort of like girlfriend but not as baggy. I wear those rolled up with boots.

But - when it's cold, I do struggle with footwear with jeans that aren't skinny and can be tucked into boots. I like the rolled up look but can't deal with cold ankles!

I also have some of those fleecy leggings from Primark - they're fab!
