Understanding Shapeware and finding strapless bras

What type of shapewear do I need and what size do I buy? There are so many types and it's very confusing. I need something I can wear with trousers and dresses and something I can wear with strapless tops.
Also any advice you have on strapless bras in a size 40D. I'm supposed to be going to a christening soon and I feel really awkward lumpy and I hope better underwear will help.

Have you followed the MN bra intervention method? Go to a Bravissimo or measure yourself following the booborbust instructions: booborbust.com/ - I strongly suspect you will not be a 40D and will need a smaller band and bigger cup size. Even if you don't believe it at first - try it, it's life-changing! You may need to try several different makes/styles to find what suits you and maybe a couple of sizes around the one it comes up with (so might be easier if you can get to a Bravissimo for fitting advice). Do not go to M&S. I hear the Wonderbra strapless are very good, though come up small in the band. Good luck :)

Brilliant thank you, I'd not seen that method I'll have to check it out.
