Do I need to use exfoliating shampoo?

And if so, is it worth getting a more spendy one, or will cheap do it? Those of you who use it, how often do you use it please. TIA.

No knowledge to offer you, but I'm also interested.

I use a lot of product and use the body shop Fuji green tea scrub shampoo approx once a fortnight if I feel my hair has a lot of product build up.

I don't have any scalp issues it's just purely for clarifying

I don't use an exfoliating shampoo but have a scalp brush massage thing from Muji which is pretty good.

OK, so in a spirit of stupidity adventure, I have tried something... Long ago, I was informed Sturgene (sp?) a wool wash liquid, would clarify your hair. I don't even know if this stuff is still available, but I have had a go with my silk/wool wash from Sainsbos. My hair hasn't fallen out, but is not actually dry yet. Will let you know.

In my opinion the only reason to use an exfoliating shampoo is to cure the sort of dandruff that is caused purely by skin build up on the scalp. I mean a kind of flaking cradle cap that adults get. It is immune to all dandruff shampoos but an exfoliating treatment will clear it up. The absolute best is Kerastase Gommage. It needs massaging into the scalp for a few minutes.

If you actually mean a clarifying shampoo, then simply having more than one type of shampoo and rotating them each wash will do a very similar job.

If you have dry scalp go to your gp and see if he can examine it to see if you have an infection. Then you get a prescription for the shampoo you need to fix it. There are various different types of bacterial infections etc and different shampoos to fix the problems. It isn’t always just a case of dry skin on your head. Some issues can weaken the hair follicles and your hair starts to fall out!

Crikey OP, is that even safe? (The wool wash) don't those things have chemical warning labels on them . I hope you didn't get it on your skin or eyes.

I'd only use an exfoliating shampoo for literal dead skin(dandruff) build up on the scalp. A clarifying shampoo should remove build up from products but to he honest I would just find a shampoo that works, and utilise conditioning treatments without silicone to manage 'frizz'. If you put a picture of your hair up (pre wool wash) people may ne able to advise on what may work for tour hair type, it really depends.

I imagine shampoo with abrasive bits in will make your scalp sore.

You can use dilute apple cider vinegar for a good clarifying rinse.

Well my hair is still here. It's not too bad in condition generally, just a bit dry. I used silicon free products for quite a while but it just looked drier and duller.

My hair needs the silicone to lock the moisture in. My hair was rough and brittle, dry and fragile during my whole no cones no phates no joy phase.

Yes, I was a bit sad about it. For some people it does great things, but not me apparently

Clarifying shampoo or a shampoo bar will work well for product build up.

Salli Hughes did a column on this a while ago if you google it. I think she said if you don't want to buy an expensive exfoliating shampoo, you can make your own with sea salt flakes -it's just something rough to remove the product build up.

Clean Maniac Micellar Shampoo by Redken is great at removing hair product residue for me

Occasional use of Vosene.

Exfoliation scrapes off rough skin. Not the same as a shampoo to remover product build up

Manta hairbrush has been great for my dry itchy scalp.
