What boots go with cropped or tapered trousers?

I'm eyeing up new trousers for the office. I feel my current ones are a bit dated so I thought cropped or tapered might make me look less tragic. These always seem to be styled with strappy sandals or courts, but no way in this weather. Is there a style of boot that goes? Or do freezing ankles go with the territory?

Ankle / calf length boots with a narrow ankle.

An instgrammer I follow wears these Free People ones with cropped jeans and they look just right to my eyes. Quite a few different colours so I'm sure there's be a pair to go with work trousers

Oh my goodness, those Free People boots are the nicest boots I have ever seen in my life!!! I want every single colour way but £168 each - I can feel my credit card haemorrhaging!

I mostly wear ankle length trousers and find they work well with these boots due to them being slightly ruched - if it's particularly chilly I like to wear thick woolly socks with them which I wear over the trousers, a bit like leg warmers - so a ruched boot with a ruched sock, if that makes sense.
