Never had a pair, however I have fallen a bit in love with these?

So for those who have had Dr Martens in the past, are they easy to break in, are they warm, are they comfortable?

I think I could wear these with jeans, dresses or skirts.

They are VERY painful to break in! But thankfully after a few wears they are the comfiest shoes ever. There are some tips to make the breaking in less painful, such as wearing double socks, plasters, and even putting newspaper in overnight- but it is worth it. The ones I have had I have always found warm and waterproof; I also wear them in the summer with trainer socks and find them okay.

Curlysurprise · 19/11/2019 17:42

Firstly, those are just gorgeous, so worth any minor discomfort 😆
Secondly, classic DMs do take some work but some of the newer leathers/ styles are a lot softer. My latest pair are pretty soft and no need for special socks.
So best thing would be to try them. 🤞🏻For you.

Check if they are leather or not. I have non leather glitter ones and beautiful as they are they are an actual instrument of medieval torture. Leather are easier to break in. Non leather not so easy at all.

MakeMineALarge1 · 19/11/2019 20:04

@iamcabbagedear

It says this - This PU-coated leather has a micro-glitter patent finish

and this - Upper:
PU Coated Textile

So doesn't appear to be leather - I might have to go and try them on

Definitely go an try them on. I have a few too many DMs and the fit varies.
Those look a bit like they might be hard to break in.

MikeUniformMike · 19/11/2019 20:17

and not an

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 19/11/2019 20:19

They look like they would be a bitch to break in, even if they are leather.

I have got DMs but they are Pascals in a really soft leather and they took zero breaking in.

Russell19 · 19/11/2019 20:22

I had the PU ones and I had to sell them because I couldn't break them in and they were so uncomfortable across the front. Confused was gutted.

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 20/11/2019 01:19

Once you break them in, they will be the most comfortable shoes you've ever owned. My first pair lasted me 10 years, and my current pair have been going for 5 years now. I can't get the link to load, but the idea of sparkly Docs sounds brilliant.

Clarinet53 · 20/11/2019 18:25

I'd try them on if you're able as I am different sizes in different styles of boot. To break them in just wear them around the house with thick socks. Once you have them broken in you'll never be without them on !

MoltonSilver · 20/11/2019 18:41

Based on previous threads, the pu version are literally impossible to ever break in. They don't stretch. Lovely as they look, I'd question whether these are any different.

hammeringinmyhead · 20/11/2019 19:10

They will never ever be comfortable. My friend has a pair in her wardrobe that she may as well bin!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 20/11/2019 19:14

I made the mistake of buying these and I agree with the others. They have never broken in like my other DMs and are just agony to wear. It breaks my heart because they are so beautiful.

TheoriginalLEM · 20/11/2019 19:20

It's a rite of passage, breaking in a pair of DMs. I used to call mine "bastards" I have a soft leather pair and they are amazing. I have just seen a pair with dragons in the link but I'm not sure im brave enough too old

MikeUniformMike · 20/11/2019 19:29

hammeringinmyhead - tell your friend to sell them. DMs sell well on ebay.

Well I went to the Trafford Centre today, they didn't have the teal ones in, so I tried these on instead and bought them.
Got some thick socks on and am wearing them in the house.

I have the unicorn sparkly ones....they look beautiful in my wardrobe! Honestly, the most painful things I have ever attempted to wear. I wore them on the school/nursery run every day for 9 months(after a couple of weeks of stomping around the house with them on)and I eventually had to stop as those 15 mins , 4 times a day, were bringing tears to to my eyes...I had tingling in my toes every time!

Craftycorvid · 29/11/2019 19:11

I haven’t found DMs uncomfortable to break in for a long time. I think they are using softer leather now. Not sure sparkly ones would be quite my cuppa tea, but I do love a good doc’ so enjoy them, OP

Purplealienpuke · 29/11/2019 19:39

My patent docs cracked across the front fairly quickly, the colour came off. They were just as easy to break in as my leather ones though.
I find them warm. I only wear with jeans, but that's my choice.
If they were leather only and you were struggling to break them in you could pee on them. It really does work. Make sure it's a hydrated pee though......

Hadsuchahardday · 29/11/2019 20:53

I bought black ones in the 90s and barely wore them, they were so uncomfortable and didn’t keep your feet warm either. Sold them 20 years later on eBay for a tidy profit!

Yes I got the black iridescent ones, I've put a sheepskin liner in to make them warmer and I used paper to stretch them over the toes etc.
I've been wearing them with black skinnies and today I've had them on with a red card pinafore slip.

Crabonastick · 03/12/2019 21:21

I nearly ripped a thumbnail off getting mine on once Blush

They’re fuckers to break in as well! Enjoy your gorgeous new shoes
