A Good Quality Petite Fitting Coat

I wonder if anyone could point me the way to the above. I’ve got a budget of up to say £500 and I just want a coat that fits where it should. I have a number of cheaper ones from Wallis etc but just don’t love them and they are a more of a make do.

Hobbs are now doing a couple of lines in petite fittings but not in the styles and/or colour I like. Boden is not really me. I tried a lovely berry colour one in Reiss but the proportions were all wrong and didn’t look easy to alter to fit ie not just the sleeves. I’m 5ft 1 and between a 6/8 depending on cut etc. and 53 yrs old.

I’m sure there must be a huge gap in the market.

I know it is not very high end, but have you tried M&S? I have occasionally found good quality items from their petite range in the past .

You say Boden isn't really you but have you looked recently? They do have some nice classic style this year and a 28% discount at the moment!

I got a lovely petite one from Superdry after really struggling. Also Uniqlo may be worth a look.

Thank you for your suggestions, I just worry with Boden that it just “screams” Boden 😁. I have been looking at them but everything seems to have strange colour combinations and the only coat that I would consider, they don’t do in petite!

I’m seriously considering getting one made. Its so frustrating as I have the money to treat myself and a good quality coat really does make you feel good regardless of what’s hiding underneath it.

With that budget I would go for jcrew.

Go vintage. Plenty of petite ladies back in the 50s so you may well find the lengths/proportions suit you. The quality is also superb: clothes were built to last and £500 will go a lot further.

I've just got an XS coat in Italian fabric from Zara - I do turn the sleeves under but you could do that and move/lose the buttons. Fit and quality is fab for £99 - several colours, camel, black and some kind of marl. I'll see if I can find a link.

I'm slightly taller than you - 5'3- but find that Brora coats fit well.

Maxmara and their sister brands make the most luxurious and timeless coats and they’re available in a size 34 and 36. You may need to shorten sleeves and hems, or move belt loops, but it’s easily done as their coats tend not to have tricky cuts or details (to avoid becoming dated). Their flagship store is in Bond Street in London if you can try on in person. However, they do sell out very early in outlier sizes - you may have to buy your winter coat in August next year!

A lot of premium brands including Burberry do a kidswear range and ages 14-16 are always worth a look for your height especially as they’re free of VAT.

I usually get kids coats or h and m .....but my budget is nearly as small as me! 😂

Oh god! I spent 2 years trying to find a coat - all the petites I tried were too big! I'm 5 foot and a 6 like you. I eventually settled for a crombie style grey funnel neck coat from Mango last year, that actually fitted me.

The nerve of some brands (FWM up thread but I know there’s others) charging £300 for a coat that’s only 16% wool and mohair .

I’m busy googling, looking at eBay etc. I managed to pick up a petite size 6 pea coat type from précis petite for £59 in their sale which arrived today but agree with Mumdon about the nerve of companies charging top dollar for a 20% wool coat (the précis one was £169 full price). It’s interesting looking at vintage/ebay that even in the eighties/nineties, shops like Richards and M&S of old were doing proper wool coats.

I’m planning a trip to Guildford in the next couple of weeks where there is a reasonable variety of shops so fingers crossed.

@countingto10 absolutely agree about the wool content! I have an old Hobbs coat that is super warm though a bit tatty now that is 100% wool and so warm. I have 50/50 wool ones which are okay but definitely not so good

oh god I'm with you. There is really a gap in the high end high street for petite. I do have high hopes for the Hobbs petite range - I got their petite rain mac and it's lovely, just not warm enough now!

I have far more Boden in my wardrobe that I really should, just because I'm sick of the petite ranges only being available in cheaper shops that use rubbishy fabrics. (and design for a younger market)

My current winter smart coat is Jaeger, it's unstructured enough that it doesn't matter where the waist is and the sleeves were plain so easy to have altered, that was a couple of years old though.

I’m short. I bought a black coat from Zara last week, it’s a wool blend masculine coat. It hits the model above the knee, but slightly on/below the knee on me - which is a perfect length for dresses and skirts.

I bought it just to wear to/from work, so wear it with formal office attire. I have got loads of compliments on how smart and sophisticated I apparently look, it’s weird. I’m only 22 and work in a junior finance role but I seem to be deceiving people that I’m much more senior/well paid thanks to a decent coat!

Bomb Petite has some suggestions, J Crew looks the best with a decent range.

Have you looked at ted baker- I know they aren’t A petite range but my 5ft very slim friend had a gorgeous coat from there so maybe worth a look.

@CountFosco that's a good website. I'm 5'1 and struggle. The trouble ( for me) with J Crew is now they don't sell via JL is shipping and returns times, brilliant products and I always want several things each season. Boden is fine but I wish they would focus on good solid colours for basics like coats not add coloured panels or quirky linings. I want solid classics from a coat or jacket and never a union flag lining!
