Are Mountain Warehouse winter coats any good?

I don't normally post here. I'm not stylish at all but I would like some opinions please.
I'm strongly tempted by this coat (partly because its got loads off) but is it actually any good or will I regret it?

Can't comment on the style but they are definitely warm. I bought a ski jacket on offer years ago and it's great in really cold weather.

MW have always got sales on though, so don't be seduced by the offer. The RRP is a bit misleading. Only have it if you really like it.

GuppytheCat · 19/11/2019 10:18

I've found them (whisper) just as good as the more basic end of Berghaus, and longer-lasting.
My criteria are more warmth-and-pockets than style-and-beauty, though.

Pascha · 19/11/2019 10:35

Brilliant. Tbh I haven't seen another coat I like for less than £100 so it's definitely a bargain for me. I'm also a warmth and pockets person and I need a coat to withstand small wellie kicks and snot.

Yes, definitely snotproof 😂

Kids and DH have mountain warehouse coats and they are very warm - kids ones have not broken or got destroyed either (like their last few coats were playing football and tag at school!)

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 19/11/2019 11:06

I have a down mountain warehouse coat. The quality is fabulous. Properly does the job. If its says its waterproof its waterproof, if it says its warm its warm.

Branleuse · 19/11/2019 11:07

I think theyre warm, but I had to take one back once because the zip didnt work

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/11/2019 11:13

I've had a MW coat and found it good quality. Look at Go Outdoors as well. I would say to try it on in person, I've found that clothes from Outdoor shops can have smaller sizing than high street shops.

thenightsky · 19/11/2019 11:15

I'm currently sat here in a freezing garage waiting for my car to be fixed, wearing a knee length MW coat and I'm really snug. It's a coat within a coat type... Waterproof outer layer and puffy inner. The quality is good in my experience, I've had a few. Only thing I find they come up a bit small and tend to be a bit shapeless... Kind of straight up and down.

SlightlySleepy · 19/11/2019 11:16

I have a coat from Mountain Warehouse and it is waterproof but it wasn't as warm as I was hoping, I had to buy another thinner thermal coat to go underneath. Although to be fair, I get very very cold, much more than a normal person!

Comefromaway · 19/11/2019 11:18

My kids have had the waterproof ones for school trips etc and they have been great. However I think Trespass ones are nicer.

JPharm · 19/11/2019 11:23

I bought a ski jacket from there about 15 years ago, it’s still going strong (though not so much for skiing now, I wear it to take the bins out 😂).

I’m quite tempted by that coat too, it looks lovely.

Whathappenedtothelego · 19/11/2019 11:35

I think they are good value.

My only reservations are that they sometimes tend to be slightly heavier and bulkier than more expensive coats (Dd is very fussy about this, or I probably wouldn't have noticed).

Also check they can be tumble dried- I have had waterproof coats from there that can't, and if you need to reproof them, it's much more straightforward and effective if you can tumble them after to activate the waterproofing.

DAMore · 31/08/2020 14:04

I've never used this site to post. Mountain Warehouse products are a bit less expensive and for good reason. Generally the products are sub standard, sizing is very poor (small), quality is marginal, jacket zippers are on the left not the right, warmth is not what it is said to be or as described. If you have to return something, it is unreasonably complex. I don't recommend this company. Have been disappointed too many times.

Beebumble2 · 31/08/2020 19:09

I have their down (synthetic) coat with a hood. It’s very warm, lightweight and great in snow and cold.
I thought it might need a heavy jumper underneath, but not so. It rolls small for summer storage and was so cheap.

feevwww89 · 15/02/2021 20:43

Generally I think you need to step up to an extreme jacket for warmth in their jackets. I find the sizes
quite large. I brought the extreme duck down jacket. Best jacket ever.

feevwww89 · 15/02/2021 20:46

I have found the opposite. I brought an extreme duck down jacket and the quality is excellent with the staff very friendly. Sizing is very large but apart from that very happy 😊

Littleguggi · 15/02/2021 20:49

I brought a winter coat from there around 2 months ago. It's super warm but the zip is a bit dodgy!

Hazelnutlatteplease · 15/02/2021 22:14

Zombie thread. (As I was surprised to find my old self commenting under a different name change)

MrsDThomas · 16/02/2021 07:24

I have a Rab-alike MW coat. I love it! Its warm and does the job. After a few washes i found its become clumpy and tumble dryer balls havent worked, but with a hoodie underneath its still great. £40 and 2 yrs old and still going.

I bought a Jack Wolfskin down coat for £150 and after a year it was no good. This, losing the down and pathetic looking.

Best coat I bought was 10 yrs ago. Karrimor padded for £50 in sports direct. Lasted 5 winters!

Oldraver · 16/02/2021 08:21

This is always a good point, as if they get too wet you can tumble. Also even if not using a re-proofer, putting them in the tumble dryer sort of 're-proofs' them a little

Muddle2000 · 20/10/2023 11:06
