Trousers for short people with short-ish legs!

I've spent practically my entire adult life in shorts (thanks Australian weather) but am currently looking to expand my wardrobe to include leggings/jeans that actually suit me. As you can see, I'm almost 5'2.5" (the .5 is key here Grin), with short-ish legs, wide-ish hips, and medium/large-ish thighs. What would suit me?

Please ladies, help her!

I, too, am in that camp of so short the half inch BLOODY MATTERS to me!! In fact I'm the same height, and I love so much that I'm not alone out here willing to die on the hill of my half inch!!

JWrecks · 19/11/2019 06:20

And by "her" I obviously mean "us"!

From someone who is 5'1with short legs and a long body my go to trousers are the straight leg ones. I can just about get away with boot cut but wide leg makes me look bottom heavy. Avoid ankle grazing trousers as they will make your legs look even shorter. If you are short with a proportionately longer body petite clothes don't fit. It is a case of shopping around until you find a store that cuts their trousers in a way that suits you. I can usually find something that fits in M and S.

I haven't found them yet! And I've been looking for the last 20 years for a decent pair of black work trousers.

nononever · 19/11/2019 06:56

I've got the exact same issue! 5'2.5 exactly, I was measured recently. The only perfect fit I get is with 7/8th gym leggings which is very limiting obviously Grin.

Minionoftheantichrist · 19/11/2019 07:00

5.05’ and here in the hope that someone comes along with an answer. Every petite make ive tried are far too long for me.

LazyFace · 19/11/2019 07:56

I'd live in skinny jeans with your figure. I do with mine anyway.
I buy most of my trousers in Next but they don't always fit in the hips. I think their size 6 might even be too big for you.

I think I've found my people! Wine

@mostlydrinkstea What kind of shoes do you wear with them? I think part 2.0 of my problem is that I work in a very beach-y place where the norm is athleisure, leggings, oversized tees, sneakers, birkenstocks, and all sorts of shorts so I can't use the classic 'trick' of wearing heels with jeans whenever I want to elongate anything.

@nononever Where do you get your 7/8 length ones from? The pair I'm wearing in the pic has I think a 25" inseam, and the 7/8 ones I've seen from Alo Yoga has a 24" inseam. Don't think that an inch will make much of a difference but this is coming from someone who is 5'2.5" (I wish we could capitalise the .5 the way we do letters) so who knows. Grin

As mostly says, full length straight or bootleg trousers are probably safest to avoid the parsnip look. I find M&S are good - their roma rise short are the best I've found in years for fitting hip, waist and leg length. I have in the past resorted to using my sewing machine to shorten jeans - it's reasonably straightforward with a good machine, a strong needle and the right colour thread.

mostlydrinkstea · 19/11/2019 08:29

Shoes are a nightmare. I've got tIny feet so can't wear heels. My job has long hours and I can be on my feet for ages so straight cut black jeans, black top and sketchers trainers are my default wardrobe. If I need to make some sort of effort my shoes are either from the children's dept or Irregular Choice as they are so stunning that it doesn't matter that there is no heel. I use the distract technique a lot with very bright lipstick, gorgeous earrings, good quality jackets and scarves. No one really notices the black or dark base layer.

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/11/2019 08:32

You look like you could fit into teen wear and that might be the best option.

nononever · 19/11/2019 13:32

@offtotheshire I buy Under Armour 7/8ths. THESE ONES are just above the ankle bone on me.

nononever · 19/11/2019 13:40

Re jeans, I've got a few pairs of Next 360 jeans which I really like but weirdly they vary in length depending on colour. However they have revamped them and they are called something else and I don't like the new style, bloody awful. Looking for a different make of 4 way stretch or whatever it's called!

I've also got a couple of pairs Levi skinnies but I bought them in the US a while ago and they are the perfect length plus they don't have Lycra. Went into the Levi shop here recently and was appalled at the quality of the jeans, thin, stretchy and cheap looking.

Hoppinggreen · 19/11/2019 13:42

I used to like Boden, although I’m not so keen now BUT I find that they do quite a lot if 7/8 trousers that are a good (full) length on me
I also find Sainsburys is good for jeans

Ugh I was there a couple of weeks ago and noticed this too. New plan now is to look for anything advertised as being 7/8 in length in maybe a straight cut. Guess brightly coloured bottoms are off the list as well!
