Hello,
I know this thread has been done to death but has anyone got anytips for greasy hair. I have longish hair, lots of it. I need to wash every other day, otherwise i look like i have put grease all over it. I work shifts so cant get up at 5 every morning to wash it. Dry shampoos are useless, ive tried numreous shamposs, even fairy liquid.

Any tips?

Obvious, but don't go for a creamy/moisturising one or use conditioner. I have found herbal essences white grapefruit & mosa mint pretty good. Change brands at least every couple of months. Seems to help. Also once a month use your bubble bath/shower gel as a shampoo & massage it into the hair, not your scalp (advice once given by a now retired hairdresser). Good luck!

Are you making sure you only use conditioner on the ends of your hair? How would your hair be if you washed it at night? This saves me time in the morning.

You want a clarifying shampoo. I use the treseme to help with this, leaves your hair feeling a bit dry but better than greasy!

Ive started using lemon juice and conditioner or a non foaming hair cleanser mixed together instead of shampoo. Really scrub your scalp and the top section of hair for a couple of minutes, rinse throughly. Condition the ends as normal.
The SLS in shampoo strips the hair so the scalp works hard to replace it. The more harsh the shampoo the more the scalp replaces it, its s vicious cycle. It may take a few weeks to rebalance but now i can go 4-5 days without washing instead of struggling to get yo 2 days before.

You have to use dry shampoo the night before. That way it settles in nicely overnight and it never gets greasy in the first place.

Basically you have to think of dry shampoo less as a curative and more of a preventative.

So some people use it on clean hair, to get tomorrow out if it. The good news is that if you do it that way you only have to use the smallest spritz and avoid the dusty look that is required when you use half a can trying to de-grease a full head.

Lush do a shampoo in a pot which has big bits of salt in, I can’t remember it’s name... I think it might be be called ‘Big’? I have seriously greasy hair, as in wash it at 8am and have to apply dry shampoo by 5pm. I used the Lush ‘Big’ shampoo once and it actually managed to make my hair and scalp dry! So if you’re really struggling perhaps try a small amount of this?

lotsofstripes · 18/11/2019 13:51

Also massive yes to Elspeth - dry shampoo the night before left to soak up grease works 10x better than applying in the morning

notmytea · 18/11/2019 13:52

Clarifying shampoo once a week. Try to use shampoos that don't build up. Head and shoulders for example is an utter nightmare for build up. try to extend it so you're washing every 3 days. I so this by just washing the front inch of hair every day so it looks a lot cleaner

Thanks everyone. Ill look out for shampoo from lush with salt. Good idea dry shampooing before my hair looks like a chip shop.

Yes to the dry shampoo advice. They really should write this on the can. Use it on hair when it's still clean, and it actually works - use it when hair is already greasy and it does very little.

@ElspethFlashman Genius! Thank you.

I have to wash my hair every day or it is a greasy mess. I recently tried the OGX charcoal and coconut shampoo and conditioner and I can miss a day now. The shampoo feels strange and it doesn't lather up but it seems to work.

I am also going to try the dry shampoo before bed trick!

bellalou1234 · 23/11/2019 19:26

Ill.try that shampoo thank you. Also using the dry shampoo as preventative working a little, ive changed brands from bastite for another one, its less white!!
