I am seriously considering a perm.

I'm not sure if it's going to be one of those decisions where I think 'wow that looks so fantastic' or I think 'wow that looks so awful, what have I done!'

I need advise on this please. I have long dark brown hair that's really thick already and a fringe

I have a friend who has a perm - she has poker straight asian hair and has a soft wave put into it. Other than that I only know OAPs who still have perms.

I am old enough to remember the 1980s when everyone seemed to have a perm.

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2019 09:34

I've never had one but am curious.

ChampooPapi · 18/11/2019 09:46

@MikeUniformMike they are making a come back for sure so they are slowly shaking off their 80s reputation. But I have only seen them on stunning models so we may be in fantasy territory that I could pull this one off!

It's the fear that I'll end up looking like I'm wearing a wig, I'm just so bored of the straight look (which with my think hair is so time consuming I just wear it up anyway all the time).

I've never straightened my hair either. It's so flat-looking, and many people have horrible ironed split ends.

Perms that were nice included Princess Di. A soft wave is probably better than a bubble perm.

Nobody wants to advise you OP.
Show some photos of what you had in mind.

ChampooPapi · 19/11/2019 18:25

@MikeUniformMike I know right! It is hardly a riveting subject though so I understand.

Will try but im useless , never actually uploaded a photo before

But surely most MNers over about 48 will have had a perm in their youth.

Daria32 · 19/11/2019 19:36

I love the beach wave type perm. Looks like it would give you a soft beachy type curl, but I’m too chicken to go for it. Yet! Please post an update if you do!

sonjadog · 19/11/2019 19:36

I am not sure that the OP wants to look like what´s-her-name from Top Gun though.

ChampooPapi · 19/11/2019 19:50

@Daria32 ooo beach wave perm, I like the sound of that

But didn't we all want that sort of look at the time.
We all wanted the Rachel hairdo too. Then it all went straight.
I had bobbed hair in the 80s and used to get mistaken for pretty much anyone who had a blonde bob. I worked in an office and used to get the 3 blonde bobs mixed up quite often. Same height, roughly about the same size and the same hair.

Just google 1980s short perms. So glad I resisted.

Back from furious perm searching (not a euthamisn)

Apparently the American Wave is the new thing, and I'm looking and liking. Will try and post a photo

OP, if your hair naturally has a wave, get it cut to suit the hair you have.
If it is thick it might not take a perm.
You could experiment with rollers to see if you like curls.

ChampooPapi · 19/11/2019 19:59

This the sort of thing I'm wanting, I have had a root perm about the years ago when I had chin length hair and it looked crazy. An absolute bird's nest with no definition, v fluffy

ChampooPapi · 19/11/2019 20:01

@MikeUniformMike that's true, it went super frizzy the last time but it was a very tight perm. I can't be farting with rollers though, I've been to that barbeque and I won't go back!

*faffing

Not farting!

I have really limp hair & miss my 80s perm that gave me a beautiful wavy 'Lob' . It looked gorgeous & really natural. The secret was small rollers for the perm but then always dry naturally after running wide tooth comb thru it, no blow drying (recipe for tight curly frizz). Then hair tongs on the fringe to get it fall on one side & no hairspray either. I'd seriously give it a go if I wasn't a bit skint at present.

MikeUniformMike · 19/11/2019 20:06

Could you scrunch your hair into beach waves?
You can get waves by dampening your hair - you might want to use a mousse or something- and twisting a high ponytail then twisting it into a bun (updo not bread) while it dries.
