Ok so not quite in the sticks, but rainy muddy touristy Cumbria, anyone else in a similar locality and how do you actually dress (regardless style&beauty threads)?

Are you all wafting around in warehouse midi polyester and teddy coats?

We live quite rural and own horses, so I spend winter in long wellies (Gumleaf) or long country boots (Kanyon or Dublin). I did treat myself to a pair of Dublin short boots last winter that are faux fur lined. They are waterproof and so warm!

I have a long, thick Equetech coat for winter, but I also wear a lot of sweatshirts/hoodies with a gillet over the top. Or I wear fitted country shirts (Rydale) under a gillet if the weather is milder.

I have far too many woolly hats/headbands and I keep them in the car with gloves, as you never know when the weather might turn. I also own lots of knee high socks which I layer over normal socks to wear under long boots.

Skinny jeans if I'm not wearing jodhpurs!

If I'm not going near the horses, the warmest coat I own is a Sea Salt waterproof with a detachable lining. DH bought it for me last Christmas, and I won't let it get wrecked by farm life 😊

CupCupGoose · 17/11/2019 11:06

Rural Northumberland. I just wear normal Clothes like I did when I lived in a city. I do have wellies but can't remember the last time I wore them. I don't even own a waterproof coat!

Ginfordinner · 17/11/2019 12:30

I don't even own a waterproof coat!

Do you never go out when it is raining?
I was in Newcastle yesterday and it rained all day. I would have got wet if my coat wasn't waterproof.

And don't get me started on people, especially short people, who use umbrellas on a crowded street Angry

Musicforsnorks · 17/11/2019 12:41

Should have said all weather proof.
I’ve got a barbour wax and a short tog24 she’ll thing. Both great but not warm in this weather.

I do believe I’m weak or something. I see many people in short, thin-ish jackets and they don’t look frost bitten!

skinny jeans or short tweed skirt with cheaper version of dubarry long boots (mine are dublin) or rockfish wellies. Breton shirts or a country shirt with either a fleece or sweatshirt (regatta joules or rydale). Waterproof coat Toggi other coats puffa or rydale. Often wear a gillet joules or landsend. I shop in the agricultural merchants or the tack shops, online or at country shows.

SteelRiver · 17/11/2019 14:08

I live in the midst of a farm in Scotland but, as I'm disabled and don't get out much, it's less of a problem for me. I have wellies and jeggings for bad snow days. Otherwise, I have ankle boots, though they are comfy and I hate them. I'm far more comfy in flats, even if my feet are cold, trousers, top & cardi if needed and a cosy wool coat. I have a few pairs of jeans and lots of lovely tops, a few jumpers. The summer here isnt that good, so I have a few t-shirts and a couple of nice skirts.

SecondTimeCharm · 17/11/2019 14:12

I moved 10 months ago and find this problem of wardrobe is really rearing its head now that it’s getting cold. Just purchased my first ever thermal turtlenecks and leggings from Uniqlo. I spent the summer in flirty little summer dresses and I hate wearing lots of bulky layers so it’s rather hellish

wageslave · 17/11/2019 14:30

I live in the hilly wet bit of West Yorkshire, so similar weather to you OP. Jeans and boots most of the time, with thermals from October to April. T shirts and lots of layers most of the time, supplemented by handmade scarves, cashmere wraps, hats and gloves. Love my long socks. Good weatherproof coats are a must (at the moment these are all from lands ends sales - some good bright colours in their coats rather than beige), and am about to buy some v glamorous waterproof over trousers for dog walking.

Today I am reconciling orphan gloves distributed across 2 cars, porch and coat pockets. You may have gathered that I look like a shapeless menopausal blob of dampness, but only for about half the time 😁. I've found it quite difficult to buy affordable waterproof coats which are stylish and don't make me feel like a lollipop lady

BursarsDriedFrogPills · 17/11/2019 15:11

I definitely have two types of look. My work/going into town look, and my at home in the sticks look. Definitely agree that the Dubarry boots (or cheaper equivalent) plus skinnies or cords, plus vaguely interesting jumper or sweatshirt is my standard country outfit, usually with some kind of huge coatigan thing over the top (for indoors) or a Rab insulated jacket (if dry) or Scandi-brand waterproof (if not).

I definitely recommend doing some hunting out of Scandi brands for a more stylish nod to outwear. And it's worth spending money on anything that keeps you warm and dry IMO. "Winter" here is October - March so cost per wear is pennies.

Constantbronchitislaryngitis · 17/11/2019 15:15

We are abit rural and I dog walk a lot
So warm walking boots for daily wear and wellies for dog walks
I wear high waisted leggings and long tops with cardigans and a vest
Or high waisted jeans with thermals underneath
When it gets colder I’ll wear trousers and a jumper
Quite fancy some long dresses with boots but can’t find any of a shape that suits me

XingMing · 17/11/2019 15:29

Edge of Dartmoor, and a dog owner. I live in jeans, cashmere jumpers and T-shirts from Uniqlo, with sensible footwear chosen to match the weather forecast. I have down coats, Didrikson waterproofs (summer and winter weights) and a selection of other coats I bought because I love them. I wear skirts and shorts over running tights a lot, so I can go to exercise classes between walking dog and the supermarket. At 63, I think wearing leggings as streetwear is too youthful. But I have a lot of hats and huffs and scarves and gloves and socks to glamorise my basic practical stuff.

CupCupGoose · 17/11/2019 15:36

@Ginfordinner I was in Newcastle yesterday too, for the Christmas market. I just had my normal (wool mix) coat on and I was fine. I don't use an umbrella either. So many people did though and agree its so annoying in a crowded place!

WhoKnewBeefStew · 17/11/2019 15:58

Barbour (none ripped one) jacket
Jeans and a jumper.
Wellies when I walk the dogs and a hat...

I work between Harrogate and London, that's when I'm bothered about what I wear.

pajamadays · 17/11/2019 15:59

Not Cumbria but the north of Scotland.

Pretty much live in skinny jeans year round when I'm not at work.
With docs, a sweater and a coat in winter.
I've got a colour block sort of puffer jacket at the moment. I think it's probably water resistant rather than properly water proof but it's kept me warm and dry so far.

Pretty much the same in summer but with nikes and no jacket.
Occasionally wear shorts or a dress if particularly warm.

I own a proper water proof jacket but it only gets worn when I'm riding or mucking out or if it gets particularly snowy.

I own wellies and walking boots but they hardly get used.

taybert · 17/11/2019 16:27

North Yorkshire. This time of year outerwear is a Didriksons parka, a woolly hat which is waterproof (game changer). Flat boots. Jeans are generally skinny and I’ve just bought some lovely merino/cashmere socks to wear with them. On top it’s normal knitwear. I don’t wear fleeces. My shoes for doing anything active are trail running trainers or wellies if it’s really muddy, I don’t own hiking boots. I’ve also got some long sorel snow boots for when it’s cold and icy/snowy.

I wear dresses pretty often but usually with flat boots and the same outer wear as above.

Musicforsnorks · 17/11/2019 16:38

This thread is interesting because at least on Mumsnet I do keep hearing that people are ditching skinny jeans.

I occasionally wear some jcrew jeggings which are basically comfy jeans but mostly short skirts and merino tights. This works for me as my legs don’t seem to get cold too easily.

Have just recalled, somewhere I have a didricksons parka, water/wind proof, I think it’s called the ‘elite’.
I cast it aside last year because it’s a touch too big on me but I’m wondering about rooting it out.

Can I ask an opinion, please?
If I post this photo of said parka, could you tell me whether you’d wear it - I am self conscious of it swamping me a bit.

Thanks again for sharing opinions and your winter go-to’s. Really helpful!

If you live in the sticks how do you dress ?

Musicforsnorks · 17/11/2019 16:39

Sorry, Eline - not elite.

Same as I wore in central London. Whatever floats my boat on the day.
Today it’s a dress, tights and boots.

Keepmewarm · 17/11/2019 16:43

I love the parka

Biancadelrioisback · 17/11/2019 16:46

I'm Northumberland and I spend my life in skinny jeans, boots (walking/Welly/leather knee high), hoodies and gilets/puffy coats. Lots of hats and scarves

taybert · 17/11/2019 16:50

Parka looks good. The advantage of it being a bit big is you can get more layers under it!

NomadNoMore · 17/11/2019 16:51

Love the parka, in fact the whole outfit.

Deepest rural France here. Hot summers, short, cold, wet, muddy winters. Skinnies are great because they tuck into wellies well.

Waxed long coat, light down coat, M and S quilted coat for when I want to look smarter.

Cashmere jumpers.

Summer, as little as possible, lots of linen.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 17/11/2019 16:52

Op, I dress a bit like you Smile

I wear a knee length parka over a dress on wet days (the last 6 weeks Hmm)

It is comfy but not too depressing

On cold dry days I wear a knee length belted wool coat

taybert · 17/11/2019 16:54

Where do you get your merino tights OP? People keep saying skinnies are on their way out but plenty still seem to be wearing them. I’ve got boyfriend/girlfriend cut I wear in the summer and I have some winter girlfriend cords but they’re quite tricky to wear really.

Curlysurprise · 17/11/2019 16:56

Scotland here, semi rural, dog walker. Skinnies often with thermal leggings underneath or uniqlo long socks; sweaters or merino base layers - Kari Traa are my favourite so look for offers on those - Docs, walking boots or aigle wellies.
Love my Didricksons parka - wearing it from now until March.
Waterproof ski pants over thermals on really wet & windy days.
Was thinking I needed to update my trouser collection...
