Ok so not quite in the sticks, but rainy muddy touristy Cumbria, anyone else in a similar locality and how do you actually dress (regardless style&beauty threads)?

Are you all wafting around in warehouse midi polyester and teddy coats?

Grin

I live in Cumbria. Haven't worn a skirt in probably 4 years and a dress only about 3/4 times a year.
Rest of the time trousers , and a top, or jumper. Same for summer but a t shirt. Craghoppers brand is your friend around these parts

mealychump · 16/11/2019 22:54

I have a heads coat! It's surprisingly warm.

Jumpers, jeans, boots (wellies!!), and a bobble hat.

Nice jumpers tho. And a nice wax jacket for general traipsing around wear.

Ginfordinner · 16/11/2019 22:54

Jeans, T-shirt, jumper or fleece, trainers or boots
In summer I usually wear a dress and sandals
I dress pretty smartly for work

mealychump · 16/11/2019 22:55

A teddy coat not a heads coat!

Ohyesiam · 16/11/2019 22:57

Somerset here.
I live in yoga pants ir skinny jeans, though I do waft more in the summer months.

HazySunsets · 16/11/2019 22:59

Not Cumbria but rural. In winter, For walking around the village/ fields dog walking, stylish long (waterproof) coat with a hood (but only need the hood when it rains) skinny jeans and my Le Chameau wellies. I’ll have a stylish jumper/ blouse etc on underneath. Or even mini skirt, jumper/ blouse and tights with my wellies and coat thrown over the top. I (like to think!!) i look stylish but semi practical.

And just wear normal, ‘stylish, trendy’ clothes when going into be city of an evening for a night out or weekend shopping etc.

At the end of the day, if there’s a likelihood that youue going to have to traspe around muddy roads/ footpaths/ fields, you can’t dress up in heels, really stylish coats etc as it’s just not practical and yes, you’ll probably look a bit of a tit. But it is possible to be practical yet as stylish as practical can be. No awful joules sweatshirts and bootcut jeans!

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 16/11/2019 23:00

I live in the Fens, as 'out in the sticks' as you can get.

Summer: denim shorts (or jeans) and teeshirts. I very infrequently wear dresses/skirts in the summer.
Autumn/Winter/Spring: a variation of jeans and jumpers or drop dresses with chunky knit cardies

Footwear is usually plimsolls or knee high boots.

Musicforsnorks · 16/11/2019 23:01

So skinnies still happening ? Grin

I do wear skirts but more hardy than wafty.

I find worrying about core warmth more important than style. It’s depressing.

HazySunsets · 16/11/2019 23:01

Oh forgot, summer, usually whatever. Summer dresses, shorts and vest tops etc. I just wear trainers if it’s not muddy or sometimes wear the above with my wellies if I’m dog walking in long grass and I want to avoid tick bites etc

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 16/11/2019 23:03

@Musicforsnorks skinnies are the only kind of jeans I own. I think they're the only jeans I've worn for the past 16 years? About halfway through my 'emo' stage to the present day. I'm 29 if that has any baring?

GuyFawkesDay · 16/11/2019 23:03

Sticks but could be seen as posh (Oxfordshire/Warwickshire borders)

I'm not posh, I'm a northern imposter.

Jeans. Jumper (Sainsbury's or H&M normally). Ankle boots. Puffa type coat....nothing remotely posh. I own nothing from joules, boden or Barbour. I'm a Chipping Norton set failure 😁

I do own dresses etc but don't wear them very often....

Goldrill · 16/11/2019 23:07

Also Cumbria, also skinny jeans with either a tshirt (summer) or long sleeved top plus tshirt (90% of year).
Had a day out in an actual city today but realised I don't have anything other than that or work clothes in my wardrobe, and that the prospect of being chilly or damp, or having to walk uphill in heels, scares me...

Musicforsnorks · 16/11/2019 23:09

I find jeans restricting (possibly have issues) so would opt form;egging first, have a barbour was but feel like a sack of spuds in it.

Currently wearing skirts, wool tights and merino base layers. For outerwear a tog 24 coat.

I have been here 16 months and love it in every way but the clothing thing still puzzles me. I’m yet to find my niche.

Funny, prior to this I was slightly further south in an urban area and wore country togs!

I'm in rural North Wales and I wear jeans , about 4 layers of top wear at the moment as it's so cold and boots scarf and duvet coat for daywear. Going out for dinner would be skinnies long wool v necked jumper camel coat , high heeled camel suede boots and suede bag.

Musicforsnorks · 16/11/2019 23:13

It’s great to hear how other people are doing it. Thanks for sharing!

gavisconismyfriend · 16/11/2019 23:21

I waddle rather than waft Grin. Mainly linen dresses and leggings whatever the weather. As it gets colder I add layers of woollens, usually topped off with a wrap/poncho.

Florabritannica · 16/11/2019 23:31

I moved to the sticks just over a year ago and feel your pain. Everything I wear gets covered in mud and I just can’t seem to find clothes that make me happy but will withstand current conditions.
People who say they wear stylish coats and tops - can you describe them? Where do you buy them?

FrangipaniBlue · 17/11/2019 10:38

I live in rainy wet Cumbria!

Skirts are strictly for work or going "out out"

Every day I wear skinny jeggings with walking boots or I have a couple of pairs of trespass bootcut walking trousers that are not obviously walking trousers IYSWIM?

Paired with under armour long sleeve tops or t-shirts for scruffs, or I have some smarter jumpers that I'd wear with jeggings and 3/4 or knee boots to be a bit smarter

FrangipaniBlue · 17/11/2019 10:43

as you've been here 16 months OP have you worked out how to spot a visiting tourist from a local/permanent resident yet?

We all wear some variation of "outdoor gear" but there is a definite noticeable difference Grin

Musicforsnorks · 17/11/2019 10:43

Most people here, both local and visitors, seem to be wearing jeans, boots, weatherproof Mac or coat. North face, Berghaus, etc. Some in barbour and dubarry, etc but most in basic rain stuff.

A few joules wearers, but mostly getting in and out of cars so not much exposure to elements.

I’m not using a vehicle, spend way too much time with numb fingers waiting for trains.

I have a jack murphy rain Mac - not warm enough and buries me.
A tog 24 short waterproof and a barbour.
I need more but am stuck. Someone tried to convince me to purchase a Rab insulated coat yesterday. It was only £370! I don’t have issue with spending on a coat but ...

OP posts:
Musicforsnorks · 17/11/2019 10:48

@FrangipaniBlue you are making sense to me! Thanks!
Am beginning to spot the difference, the visitors are stressed permanently about parking - don’t blame them really, I don’t envy trying!

Typically the older generations seem to have it sorted. Most local youth in puffas and skinnies. Overseas visitors in long wool coats and midi skirts. Not seen any locals in fairfax and favor Grin

OP posts:
FrangipaniBlue · 17/11/2019 10:51

You can get a good Rab cheaper than that, try Go Outdoors they have some good last season bargains.

I find residents seem to look "effortlessly outdoors" whereas tourists look like Mountain Warehouse exploded on them - too try hard and matchy ?!

I don't know anyone who wears Joules or Barbour, but then I don't live in the "posh" part of Cumbria, I imagine it's more prevalent in the South Lakes area.

This is all tongue in cheek btw Grin

I love where we live OP, we are very very lucky

FrangipaniBlue · 17/11/2019 10:52

or the other end of the scale tourists who go up the fells in flip flops in summer 🙈

Musicforsnorks · 17/11/2019 10:57

The locals I’m aware of do not fear the fleece!
A lot of stuff Mumsnet users frown upon, haha.
