That is all.
They’re a hobby when I’ve free time, my armour when I’m feeling low and just all round fun too.
Ebay and charity shops are my favoured hunting grounds as I love a good rag pick but clothes shopping on the high st I also enjoy.
Just had to share. 😊

I have a ridiulously well stocked wardrobe, the best of it was inherited. There are not many events I could not assemble a decent outfit to suit without shopping at all, from a glitzy ceremony to a wet weather walk. But I shop modestly now I am 63, from Uniqlo, preloved and always in the sale, with occasional splurges, and my good clothes are not worn hard for work and commuting. DH likes cars, and usually makes a profit buying and selling them. But I love textiles, and the pleasure is worth it.

SurpriseSparDay · 17/11/2019 17:52

Thinking about it, it’s only since I’ve been on MN (about eight or nine years) that I’ve come to realise other people don’t love clothes - and that many hate and despise the idea of spending money on them.

The number of women who post smugly about their entire wardrobes being tossed in the trolley along with the nappies and baked beans - and who react with utter horror at the idea of someone else spending more than £50 on a single item ... (Though this seems to be a peculiarly English habit of female martyrdom or self-effacement - no matter how expensive their husbands’ hobbies.)

I don’t much care for aeroplanes, am rather over expensive restaurants, in fact rather over most possessions - but my carefully chosen wardrobe has as much value to me as the next person’s hoard of art. (Though I don’t consider clothes as anything other than a temporary investment in extreme satisfaction, and I’m not looking to make a profit.)

I do love a bargain. And the stalking of a particularly lovely thing on the Internet. And TK Maxx Gold Label. And other people’s cast-offs - particularly if they’re Harris tweed or velvet. I’m no good at bling. Or outfits actually. I just love the clothes for themselves and try to make them fit my life.

I crossed you XingMing - not actually a response to your post!

XingMing · 17/11/2019 17:58

Just a similar point of view SurpriseSparDay.

OneOfTheGrundys · 17/11/2019 23:18

Yes. A wardrobe can be a life, can’t it. I’ve kept several items from my children too. Some lovely t shirts they both wore and loved.
My best friends mum gave me some lovely things when younger, vintage Biba, and it was just the best gift. Lovely.
Uniqlo and tkmaxx are fab. I also fancy this book.

Gosh I love clothes.

I love clothes shopping too, particularly online shopping. I spend approx ten hours a week looking at clothes online.

But I overspend and feel very guilty which takes away the joy.

I have a habit of buying and leaving clothes in bags. I also buy a ‘perfect’ coat only to find an even better one a few months later and I end up with two very similar coats. I have a countless amount of knitwear because I find my top half easier to shop for.

Overall I really have to stop.

NettyGubbins · 18/11/2019 01:50

I’m currently overweight and hate clothes.

But I love perfume ❤️

nzeire · 18/11/2019 07:05

I LOVE clothes too!!! I live in a neat little area with boutiques that are perfect for me, small local designers, big local designers.

I don’t love shopping though... I tend to walk past a window, see something, instantly fall in love and obsess over it until I own it

I’m good at moving on stuff I no longer wear. I get huge joy out of my lovely things... they make me, me!!!

bananacakerox · 18/11/2019 07:22

Oh me too, love a browse looking at new styles, thinking what would suit me, and inspecting eg the fabric cut, would it suit me. I love silk, embroidered & interesting patterns.

ilovecherries · 18/11/2019 09:19

I discovered a love of clothes rather late in life, and for decades shopped out of the men’s department of mountain warehouse. A blend of overweight, other priorities, feeling I wasn’t worth it, feeling that nice clothes undermined my political beliefs or was professionally shallow etc etc kept me stuck in a style wilderness. At 59 I had a complete life overhaul (kept the DH and the dog but not much else) and three years later I have a wardrobe I adore. None of it is particularly high end as I was aware that I was going through an experimental phase, but I do love it. Nothing gives me more pleasure these days than wandering through shops letting my hands drift alone racks of clothes. I don’t even have to be buying, just looking and touching is interesting. I love the process of getting dressed, opening the wardrobe and thinking about how I want to be in the world on any given day.

itallwentwrongat30 · 18/11/2019 10:11

fellow clothes lover here. I mainly buy second hand - I love abargain. but i equally love browsing all day, putting outfits together, sorting my wardrobe with the seasons etc etc!!! Love it

CointreauVersial · 18/11/2019 10:24

Ahhhh.....my people!

I love clothes too. Browsing clothes, trying on in shops, flicking through "outfits of the day" on IG, or just shopping my wardrobe. When I had some bad news recently, one of the first things I did was head out to a local charity shop and have a good rummage. If I need to calm myself down at night so I can drift off to sleep I start to build outfits in my head. God, I sound like a nutter!

I try to keep costs down by hunting down sale bargains or (best of all) finding amazing things second hand. I have far too many clothes, but love being able to dig something out of the loft that hasn't been worn for years, and resurrect it again. Or finding the perfect top in my wardrobe to match a new skirt.

I'm unapologetic - it's my hobby, and I don't really spend much on other things. I'm at home currently, recouperating from an operation, and it grieves me to be wearing joggers and old sweaters at the moment.

Branleuse · 18/11/2019 10:26

Me too. I have too many, but I just love them and get a lot of joy from clothes

itallwentwrongat30 · 18/11/2019 10:50

I love hearing that other folk get joy from clothes - I was just asking my OH the other day if he thinks I am mad because of how obsessed I am (as I said this I was standing in one of his hoodies and holy jeans helping him on the farm though) haha

peaceanddove · 18/11/2019 11:06

I love, love, love clothes too. I'm never happier than when rummaging through the rails in a good charity shop and finding a hidden gem. I have a Pinterest board purely devoted to fashion and I regularly save different outfits to it that catch my eye. I browse IG for outfit inspiration too. All my outfits are planned in advance, I never just pull something randomly out of the wardrobe.

peaceanddove · 18/11/2019 13:17

Can anyone recommend good accounts to follow on IG please? I'm not interested in high fashion particularly, just women who can put together a stylish every day outfit.

OneOfTheGrundys · 19/11/2019 08:47

So glad you all I’m not the only one... I feel sometimes that loving clothes is viewed as synonymous with loving fashion or expensive things, or super styled looks... it’s not that at all, it’s the process of looking, acquiring, wearing, the whole thing.
I’m on a day off from work today, in new look jeans (ebay) old jumper (whistles sale) and sheepskin boots.

OneOfTheGrundys · 19/11/2019 08:49

Also, does anyone own things to look at they’d never wear?
My friend has a beautiful shepherds type smock thing just hanging on her bedroom door. She never wears it, it’s just pretty and a lovely thing.

Me me me! I collected vintage clothes from the mid 70s till the 90s (when Kate Moss came along and ruined it for everyone). I've got some 1920s and 30s dresses I'll never wear again, and I don't have a daughter to pass them on to. My head says I should sell them before they fall apart and use the money to buy things I'll actually wear. But every time I get them out they give me so much pleasure I can't bring myself to do it.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/11/2019 09:10

I love new clothes but my true joy is high end skincare products,I love opening the cellophane and believing they will do miracles Grin

OneOfTheGrundys · 19/11/2019 09:14

Keep! They sound beautiful and you never know who you will meet in future life you may want to give them too. They sound as though they’ve been in your life a while, so why part with them just because you feel you should?
They’re not like cars on bricks in the drive, taking up loads of room, are they. I’ve a beautiful vintage Laura Ashley fine wool dress. It’s a little tight over the bust but it’s too lovely to part with.

Hehe! ‘Unboxing’!
My DS and I like sliding new soap out of boxes. A smooth new bar of soap is a lovely thing.

@ NettyGubbins I definitely find that perfume completes the ‘story’ of any outfit. Unfortunately the creator of my favourite seasonal perfume died recently and it’s now unavailable. Not sure how long my half bottle will last ...

Is there anything we might suggest to draw you away from your current clothes enmity? A luxurious new hat? An extravagantly warm scarf?

OneOfTheGrundys · 19/11/2019 09:58

Yes. A scarf. If that’s an item of clothing that doesn’t compliment a fabulous perfume I don’t know what is!

I love clothes too and spend lots of time on it, it's my hobby and brings me joy.

I don't have a lot of disposable income, so mostly eBay and charity shops with the odd new thing. I love outfit of the day on IG and a good Pinterest browse for outfit ideas.

I also love shopping for other people though and often spend a happy evening helping someone find a party outfit etc.
