Haven’t seen anything nice in the shops for ages.Im 48 and a winter, size 10/12 and like tailored rather than floaty. All I can find is floppy dresses and the shops seem to be awash with man made fibres!

Other than jeans and cashmere jumpers, I’ve bought nothing for ages. I’m after some nice going out tops and a couple of really nice work dresses as I wfh 3/5 so dont need an extensive work wardrobe . Brands I like are Baukjen, Jaeger , Uniqlo , used to be Whistles/LK Bennett but think both have gone off in recent years.

Any pointers, I don’t mind splashing out or even waiting for sales. All suggestions welcome.

Reiss, Hobbs.
At the lower end of the scale (if you like), I like Zara and Dorothy Perkins for tailored stuff. And Next. But possibly too much polyester there.

Have you looked at Boden. Lovely quality tailored but with a bit of british quirkiness. Worth having a look in the sale

OP I've had the same problem for several years! Mainly for tops - both short and long sleeved. I have a number of shaped, fitted tops from years ago that have darts to make them hang in a flattering way - but haven't seen anything like that for years, and mine are all getting pretty tired.....

I am 5 ft 2 and short in the back so anything loose or baggy makes me look like a sack of spuds - although I am also only a size 10. I'm not even averse to good quality man made fibres - but I do want the clothes to have a tailored fit. I'll have a look at some of the sites mentioned here but have tried for so long, I don't hold out much hope Sad.

Have you tried Selfridges online? I'd avoided for ages thinking £££'s (and there is alot, tshirt for £600 anyone?!Shock), but theres actually a huge range of lovely clothing, lots of offers depending on brand at the time, and you can filter your tailored requirements, price low-high etc. They package beautifully, no quibble returns, next day tracked delivery (I opted for a yearly 10 fee for that, really worth it, use Selfridges now for all make up (they even throw in a few freebies for that from time to time!)
They do alot of the brands people have mentioned aswell

Biden very very poor quality now, thin fabrics badly stitched, badly designed, nothing like the pictures. It is Primark quality (if you are lucky)

It has gone downhill but still trading off it's reputation from 10-20 years ago

British quirkiness = Union Jack
patterns on everything 😀

I like their children’s clothes but I have returned the few items I have bought for myself over the past year. The heavily patterned materials are sewn badly so the patterns don’t align and despite everything looking ok in the website catalogue, nothing ever fitted quite right. But perhaps I have the wrong body shape for the clothes.

To add to Simply B for me , (super picky trendy but looking age appropriate at 69 , must “ look quality” Tu , can pick out jumpers in right size colour good price .

Cambionome · 01/12/2019 19:12

Boden is absolutely not Primark quality! I've had clothes from both recently and both have their place, but Boden is much better quality (as it should be for the price).

I would suggest The Fold and Baukjen. The merino knitted dresses that The Fold do are a bit less formal than the other styles. Baukjen is less expensive and still good quality.
