Highlights to cover greys making skin look washed out

I’ve got naturally mousey brown hair but the greys are appearing more and more now. I’ve been having bleach highlights this year to try and disguise or at least blend them in which does help.

The highlights I feel make my face look an odd colour, a bit washed out and yellow. My skin tons does actually look better against the brown hair underneath the highlights (only had half head done) but when I tried dying it all brown the grey root regrowth was awful and looked a mess and needed touching up too often.

I’m booked in soon for a t-section and don’t know what to ask for. Can anyone help please? Or do I need to change my make up to suit the blonder hair??

When you go for your appointment ask what the hairdresser suggests. I find mine very good for subjective advice on colouring and what would or would not suit my hair type and colouring.

Could you embrace the grey? Using a balm to smooth and moisturise them. What percentage is coming through? It has fortunately become trendy. Lots of inspiring grey styles on instagram/Pinterest.
Sounds as if the highlights are warm, but your natural tone is cool.

Highlights can be cool (ash) or warm. It sounds like you've got the wrong tone for your skin colour. From what you've said, I'd guess you've got cool skin with a warm hair colour.

Watching this with interest as I am 10 percent grey with mid brown hair and also tried to go lighter (not blonde) and looked washed out. I am back warm brown again but grey not covering. I am thinking of having warmer/slightly darker lowlights put in and letting grey come through with this.

I did the same at the start of summer and felt I looked washed out and ill initially. Started wearing a tinted moisturiser (I am normally no make up). I looked healthier with a holiday tan and received lots of compliments about it. My hairdresser also changed the colour slightly and now with no tan I am loving the colour.

Maybe it's time to embrace the grey?

Mine is growing in more grey than anything these days and I'm just at the point now where I think I need to admit defeat. My thinking is that once it's all grey I can get a better idea of what it looks like and what works with it if I do decide to colour it again.

I am embracing the grey but gradually hence my reason for going a lot lighter as I didn’t want to go cold turkey. By going quiet a bit lighter my grey is coming through more and more (but by doing it this way I avoid the badger effect).

Daddylonglegs1965 could you tell me how your hairdresser changed the colour so that you are now happy with it? I think I need to add in another colour to the highlights to stop them looking so light blonde, but I have no idea what colour to add. Whenever they show me those charts with the hair strands on them I just picture what it will look like when done.

Moltonsilver I think you’re right and I have got the wrong colour for my skin tone but I think it’s the other way round and my skin is warm (olivey) but the highlights are cool. I really don’t know to be honest. It did look much better when I has a tan but now I just feel dull all over.

What kind of colour highlights usually suit olivey skin tones the best?

I had no idea what it was going to look like, but by God I have a lot of white/silver! Sometimes it looks white, sometimes blonde, sometimes darker silver - never boring! I'm 44. And for the first time in my life I look radiant!

My colouring is extremely pale at the best of times and as far away from Olive as possible. My hairdresser put some more highlights in and ran a toner through it. Sorry I can’t be more helpful. Maybe tell hairdresser you feel washed out with the colour. I also had to check I still suited the same colours with blonder/greyer hair.
