New coat, stiff zip. What can I do other than take it back?

The zip is ridiculously stiff and jams multiple times on the way up and down, so much so I'm worried it'll end up snapping off.

Is there anything I can do to loosen the zip so it goes up and down without getting stuck?

Somebody recommended soap on the zip left overnight but it hasn't made a difference.

I don't think I could return it now and I would rather keep it, but the zip is making it difficult to wear as it takes forever to get on and off.

Is the zip made of plastic or metal?

Amini · 08/11/2019 13:47

It's all metal

Rub it with a pencil on both sides up and down. Will ease the zip straight away.

WD40 sprayed onto a tissue then wiped down the zip on both sides.

yes - pencil. works a treat!

Itsashame · 08/11/2019 14:51

How do you use a pencil? I might be being a bit think here but like writing down the zip? Confused

Itsashame · 08/11/2019 14:51

I meant thick
Not think

@Itsashame - yes. Literally scribble up and down the whole length of the zip. The graphite helps loosen it up.

Itsashame · 08/11/2019 14:56

Ah ok thanks! I wonder who discovered this tip and how!!

WhatchaMaCalllit · 08/11/2019 14:58

Do the pencil thing on the closed zip on both sides (inside and outside of the zip).

Other than that, if it's getting jammed, check to see if some of the material from the coat lining is getting caught in the zip as you're trying to close/open it. That could be a design flaw and could be worthy of returning the coat.

Olive oil. I had a pair of boots like that and they are no problem now.

iklboo · 08/11/2019 15:31

My grandparents did the pencil / zip thing and they'd all be over 100 now so it's been a while!

Itsashame · 08/11/2019 16:12

Oh wow Iklboo I’ve never heard of it before!

Alternatively, if you have a tailor/clothes altering service locally, you could ask them to replace the zip.
