What coats are your older teen girls wearing?

Dd is 18 and needs a new coat. She is currently wearing a black padded coat that she's had for ages and has seen better days.

She's not sure what sort of style to go for and I don't know what's popular with this age group.

She's about 5'1" and size 10.

Any suggestions please? Not sure of budget, maybe up to £100.

Baby A is fantastic range. All my DD's wear although not sure how you can buy a coat under £100 OP. Anything that price will be a false economy and sort of thing kids in state schools wear. Best - honestly meant - go for mid range £350 plus and look good.

twosoups1972 · 07/11/2019 10:19

??? I’ve bought many coats under £100 from various high street shops

You sound lovely RosieBenenden obviously your expensive education didn't run to teaching you any manners.

ChanChanChan · 07/11/2019 10:36

State school hereWink, we (DDs and myself) have several Uniqlo coats, around the £100 mark. They keep us warm and 17 yr old DD thinks they're lovely.

KittiesInsane · 07/11/2019 10:37

Your teenagers wear coats??

Ellapaella · 07/11/2019 10:37

My 18 year old stepdaughter has this https://www.topshop.com/en/tsuk/product/clothing-427/jackets-coats-2390889/black-padded-puffer-jacket-9204542
You can't go wrong with something from TopShop for that age group.

@RosieBenenden did you actually just say that? What exactly is wrong with going to a state school? You can have my very first mumsnet biscuit Biscuit

DD (17 at 6th Form, no uniform)
Wears either a padded bum length from Top Shop, fleecy bomber style from Urban Outfitters or a cord/velvet bomber from Urban Outfitters .
None of which is any use in the rain Hmm

She's just bought a pleather biker from Pretty Little Things but not worn it yet .

Back in the day when I had some say in her wardrobe she had a Superdry waterproof ( lined with mesh not fleece) and a parka from Matalan but they fitted in her school uniform policy .

sort of thing kids in state schools wear Pardon my French but What the Actual Fuck ? .

Ellapaella · 07/11/2019 10:39

Having just googled BabyA it seems to be a designer label for babies and young children. Maybe not so suitable for an 18 year old?

KittiesInsane · 07/11/2019 10:40

I'm assuming RosieBenenden is a comedy character I haven't yet heard of.

DD (when persuaded beyond crop tops in actual sleet) tends to go for giant 80s vintage fleeces or XXL men's jackets, but I'm going to lurk here in anticipation of useful advice for the next phase.

chartreuse · 07/11/2019 10:41

I just got dd a lovely padded coat in Zara, and astonishingly she is actually wearing it. I think it's called oversized padded coat. Bonus is that it has a hood!

Yummymummy2020 · 07/11/2019 10:42

If she likes bomber jackets hollister and Abercrombie can have some good offers on for under that price range at times if you shop online, if you can hang on till Black Friday you might get an even better deal again. I have found their coats great quality warm and depending on the style fairly water resistant too! They also have a loyalty thing online aswell that you get an extra ten percent off if you join and points. (Don’t work for them I swear, just very pleased with past purchases!!!)

Yummymummy2020 · 07/11/2019 10:43

I don’t know why I specified bomber jackets really I mean warm winter jackets in general including padded!!!😂😂😂

PuppyMonkey · 07/11/2019 10:45

Grin at Rosie.

I’ve had several fruitless trips with my (younger) teens to find coats and they won’t tolerate any of them in the main shops. They’re insisting on wearing their Superdry jackets from Xmas last year at the moment. Hmm

I’ve told them they’ll be sorry in the depths of winter, but I think refusing to wear a coat in winter is a sort of right of passage, isn’t it?Grin

Comefromaway · 07/11/2019 10:52

My completely privately educated 18 year old daughter is currently wearing a red padded jacket from Primark. I think it cost about £10-15, not sure she buys her clothes herself from her allowance. She would usually buy black but as she cycles a lot wanted something bright for winter nights.

(she's 5ft 3 and about a size 8-10)

Rosie is just trying to wind people up. I often find that its the ultra expensive coats that look trashy and don't last.

Aventurine · 07/11/2019 11:03

Padded coats are popular. H&M are good for them

SillyUnMurphy · 07/11/2019 11:09

You sound lovely RosieBenenden obviously your expensive education didn't run to teaching you any manners.

Or any basic grammar and sentence structure it would seem.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2019 11:13

DD is just past teenage but was a teen when she got her current selection of coats. (State school, Cambridge, that ok Rosie?Grin)

She has a nice quite plain but smart black cloth coat from Debenhams - petite fitting which is important for 'proper coats' if you're short. It looks like wool but isn't, so it may not last decades but was under £50. She liked it so much she asked for a duplicate for Xmas, the spare is at home.

Then for general cycling/walking, a berghaus shell - not cheap maybe £70 or so.

And then the plainest possible padded black jacket from new look.

At this age, tbh, it's probably good if they get whatever they like and will be appropriate for their lifestyle, rather than worrying about what others are wearing. If she's likely to be off to uni next year then practicality is important.

Loopytiles · 07/11/2019 11:17

What does she do day to day? Eg outdoorsy stuff or socialising would call for something different from a car or bus school run and going out in the evenings.

confusedmaybe · 07/11/2019 11:20

An oversized padded coat should do it. I've seen some in Topshop.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2019 11:43

An oversized padded coat is liable to completely swamp someone 5'1" though.

PuppyMonkey · 07/11/2019 11:53

I think young people’s affinity for oversized padded coats has been severely overestimated if the two in my house are anything to go by. Wouldn’t be seen dead etc

Bortusesmoustache · 07/11/2019 12:00

I work in an FE College in a small town - almost every single female student possesses a short, black, puffer jacket with furry hood, almost certainly from Topshop. I sometimes wonder whether they write their names on the label to avoid confusion.

Oliversmumsarmy · 07/11/2019 12:07

Dd has really long arms and finds it difficult to find a coat that covers them fully.

She has a few jackets and a thin black coat but coming out of work at 3am as we head into winter she is on the look out for a smart black wool coat.

Livebythecoast · 07/11/2019 12:15

rosie Baby A Hmm. OP 's daughter is 18 years old not 18 months.

Yes, puffer jacket with fur hood - very in atm

dontgobaconmyheart · 07/11/2019 13:05

@rosiebenenden oh dear Confused time to leave the bubble and join the real world again as entitlement seems to have taken over . Imagine being so embarrassing and that you actually think a coat cannot be purchased for under £100, or that looking like a state school child is a source of shame- shame on you.

If your username is accurate I'll have to remind myself to steer clear of the area, I'm not that far away and the performative and competitive snobs around here are just too much as it is. Evidently money doesn't buy brain cells or the ability to critically think, let alone the wherewithal to understand that what brand of clothing a person is wearing bears very little meaning at all other than to people such as yourself.
