"Cheap" Cashmere

EsmeShelby · 02/11/2019 18:56

Where would I get some reasonably priced cashmere this year? I have bought from Tesco in the past but they don't seem to be doing any this year ( or maybe not release yet)

TIA

Not Tesco cheap but Jigsaw have 20% off all knitwear this weekend, including cashmere.

JaneR0chester · 02/11/2019 19:01

Uniqlo is my go to for cashmere, washes and wears well, loads of colours and several styles.

I also saw some on H&M's website, lots of different styles but I've never bought their cashmere so can't tell you about their quality.

EsmeShelby · 02/11/2019 19:04

Thanks. Does Uniqlo come up small in sizing? I'm not petite.

I got some great cashmere from an online bargain/outlet site Secret Sales. T K Maxx is another place, but they can be variable.

Namechangenecessity · 02/11/2019 19:21

I’ve got the Uniqlo crew neck. It’s beautiful, washes well no bobbling so far , unlike my Pure collection sweaters which have gone very bobbly ! I’m a size 10 and I wear a small.

FaithInfinity · 02/11/2019 19:34

I saw some cashmere in my local Tesco last week.

NoFun21 · 02/11/2019 20:14

Sorry OP but I can’t buy cashmere although I love it after seeing videos of cheap cashmere being harvested from goats screaming in pain as their skin was gashed and fur crudely removed.its lovely but not worth that for me. If I can’t afford traceable high welfare cashmere I won’t buy it but I may have to stop wearing wool too as it’s also dreadfully cruel. Oh dear.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 02/11/2019 20:34

Tesco are doing it this year but only stocked in the stores in fancier areas. 20% off last week so very bargainous.

BubblesBuddy · 02/11/2019 21:26

It’s cruel to remove excessive wool from a sheep??? It’s utterly cruel to let the poor animals overheat in summer because it’s kept on them. FFS. Few animals want extra fur or hair in hot weather. It does them no harm to be shorn! At all.

JaneR0chester · 03/11/2019 13:16

@EsmeShelby I find their sizing spot on generally - they hold a bigger range of sizes online than on store. And last year I tried on some of the menswear cashmere for a slouchy, looser fit.

Their delivery and returns service is pretty good, although I often order online but return to a store as I like to browse in person.

Rustyigloo · 03/11/2019 17:11

@BubblesBuddy it's from goats. The wool is technically downy fur on their bellies. They live in Mongolia and unfortunately the time of year where there's the highest demand is now. The goats often don't have enough coverage to survive the winter.
Goat herders are also being heavily exploited due to demand.
I'm a wool wearer by the way but the whole cashmere industry is a total shitfest.

LaPampa · 03/11/2019 17:16

Uniqlo here - i wear the men’s ones usually an XS (I’m a 10) some have been going for 5 or more years with continuous wear all year.

That said, I’ve not looked into the ethics. I probably should.

Floisme · 03/11/2019 17:36

Yeah there are good reasons why cashmere was a luxury product until recently. I know there are issues over a lot of high street fashion but cheap cashmere involves some seriously dodgy practices. Overgrazing of land is another. Plenty of info if you google it. I only buy it second now although I know that's not perfect either.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/11/2019 17:50

Proper shearing for any animal done by an experienced shearer shouldn't cause any injury ( maybe stress as they are restrained ?)

My DSis lives in NZ and shearers are hugely skilled and paid accrdingly .

But like any other process , if it's done badly , too quickly , by unskilled ...then something will suffer . Quality and the animal.
Cashmere is lovely but it isn't for me , I don;t have the lifestyle and I don't need the extra warmth

I won't buy down/feather now after finding out the cruel side of the industry .

Oh , BTW , don't Google angora rabbits being harvested . Break your bloody heart Sad

TattiePants · 03/11/2019 17:53

Gap currently have 40% off everything including their cashmere.

BubblesBuddy · 03/11/2019 20:53

Rustyigloo: I was responding to your concern about wearing wool. This comes from sheep, in the main, not goats. There is no reason to think ethically sourced cashmere cannot be purchased. It can. Buyers have to pay more and many won’t.

When a wool can be sold from an animal for a lot of money, most farmers keep the animal in good condition and shear it with care. It’s in their interest to do so. We cannot support poor husbandry of animals but the idea that all animals are not looked after just isn’t correct.

MerryDeath · 04/11/2019 07:25

uniqlo, boden, possibly m&s? john lewis

Rustyigloo · 04/11/2019 07:45

@BubblesBuddy it wasn't me who said that it was NoFun21.

BubblesBuddy · 04/11/2019 08:36

Oops! So sorry, Rustyigloo.

Rustyigloo · 04/11/2019 10:04

No worries 😊

dontcallmelen · 04/11/2019 11:33

@EsmeShelby Tesco had cashmere jumpers in my local store at the weekend were £55.00 for the V neck ones.

Djangor3725 · 04/11/2019 12:41

Ebay - got my first cashmere sweater from Ebay about 15 years ago - it still looks good as new. Johnstons of Elgin make Brora's cashmere items, but their own things are cheaper (although they don't do all the lovely Brora colours). Otherwise just search on Cashmere on Ebay & you can get a real bargain. Also agree re Secret Sales - got a great quality sweater from there from a small brand I hadn't heard of before.
