A silky sophisticated colleague at work was chatting to one of the younger girls (funkily dressed in a tiara and boots) and she said K* tell me you’ll never wear ballet pumps ... made me think I have a wardrobe full of the shoes are they really such a no no these days? What else looks good with a dress or skirt - hell am I really so out of touch?!

Awful for your feet! Only ballet dancers can walk in them. Unless you are doing exercises to make your feet super strong and self supporting, they are best avoided.

Wear what you want. As someone else said I wouldn't be taking fashion advice from someone who wears a tiara to work. I like ballet flats for work because we remove our shoes at work I work in peoples home so want to protect the carpet. I spend alot of time bare foot. ( before anyone says it, I have wipes and deodorant in my bag to clean my feet when I get to work so they aren't smelly).

Ballet pumps are very chic but only with cropped straight leg or skinny jeans, a casual top and an oversized blazer or trench, think Parisienne style. I don't think it's fashionable to wear them with skirts and dresses though, it's not the right kind of vibe.

It wasn't the tiara-wearer dissing ballet flats in the OP, it was silky-sophisticate. And I think she only meant they wouldn't suit her vibe.
I have a couple y (Goth) pals who wear tiaras on occasion. Looks amazing.

Ballet pumps are about the only thing that passes for comfortable on my arthritis ravaged feet. I couldn't care less if someone thinks they're not trendy and I'd tell them so.

I'm also stuck on the tiara thing.... must be a very relaxed (or something?!) workplace
