Vintage - delighted or deluded buying these?

I am going round for dinner with friends tomorrow. Old friends but also a couple down from London. Wanted to get one of those over sized tent dress monstrosities as they look like you made effort without being dressed up.
Found a very current one in charity shop but miffed at having to pay £12. Also thought it might date as very obviously 2019

I the then went to out vintage shop and got totally sucked in by these two. One looks baggy but has side flap bits. Thought it looked similar but different.
The other looks beautiful on and is pure silk with fabulous matching lining. I got both for £55.
Done well or an idiot for spending £37 more than I wanted?

( I also think it’s important to support local indepengant shops as well as charity shops).

Photo?

Supersimkin2 · 31/10/2019 17:49

oooo OP, how LOVELY. They are both crackers. Timeless, simple yet interesting - well done.

Zillion times better than a flash-in-the-pan tent dress made of plastic.

zurigirl · 31/10/2019 17:58

Ooh, I really like the first one! Smile

zippyswife · 31/10/2019 19:51

Yes go for the first one!

EbayAddiction · 31/10/2019 19:55

The first one is nice but I don't think they would have been worth the overspend. For me anyway. I don't like the second one. I often get swept away in charity shops!

Starfish83 · 31/10/2019 20:25

Really like the first one. Long a vintage charity shop buy. It’s also about how you accessorise and carrying it off confidently. I think you’ll look fab!

Starfish83 · 31/10/2019 20:25

Love even! 🙈

DontCallMeShitley · 31/10/2019 20:40

First one has a kind of 80's look.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 31/10/2019 21:43

OK I’m happy that most of you quite like them! In fact the first one looks a bit less cool on but it’s “different” enough to carry it.

I like the second one because of the top. It’s a bit 90’s maybe? Not sure how to update it. I’ve got my MN ugg boots from S&B recommendations a few years back, sorry. Any help with styling it or do we think it’s a bit frumpy?I think the silk makes it look better in real life.

It looks really good on. Could you try on the second one pleaseGrin
Think it might be better with ankle boots though.

RickOShay · 31/10/2019 21:47

I mean the first one!

Atalune · 31/10/2019 21:50

The shape of the second one is killer on you.

Not with the uggs though, try a little black or brown ankle boot.

First dress is more currant in its print.

SteelRiver · 31/10/2019 22:09

I think the silk is gorgeous! As its patterned, I'd keep accessories and shoes quite simple, not too chunky.

I'm so envious. The only stuff I come across in charity shops is Primark or Matalan!

FemaleEcho · 31/10/2019 22:19

I love the first one, the second one I wasn't sure about because if the pattern but having seen it on you it's looks gorgeous.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 31/10/2019 22:51

Good grief the second dress is why you should always try on. It's gorgeous on and you have a cracking figure and beautiful skin OP.

Not keen on the Uggs with it though.

The first dress looks great on the hanger. What's it look like on?

Bargains I say.

Redcrayons · 31/10/2019 22:56

Looks fabulous on, though not with the boots Grin. What colour is it? Looks grey or green.
I'd probably get it shortened as I don't like that length on me.

Can't tell with the other one from the hanger pic, it doesn't look like much.

peachgreen · 31/10/2019 22:57

I love the first one! I think I like the second one on (it's a lovely fit and your figure is amazing) but I can't tell because the watch and the boots are ruining it!

Time40 · 31/10/2019 23:17

OMG - I recently bought a dress with a similar print in exactly the same shape and style as that first one, on Ebay. I didn't realise it was vintage (it should go without saying that I like it a lot, seeing as I bought one). On mine, the "side flaps" push inside the dress, and I'm pretty sure they are actually pockets. Mine's by Adini, and it's a thickish pure cotton jersey fabric.

They both look great, OP. Money well spent.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 31/10/2019 23:34

Ok. The first dress is less good on. I have seen it needs a belt ( it’s got hoops, I’ve only noticed in the photos) . BUT I thought the idea was good. Like seeing people in flared jeans above the ankle - not flattering as such but looks good because it’s “current”.
First dress ...longer....shorter. Not as “pretty” but more interesting?
Can we ignore Quest Red please. Say Yes to the Dress. I was a bride last year and still a bit obsessed.

The second one is green and grey, It has chartreuse piping round the middle and the fab lining.

Ok worried about the first. But it’s what I wanted, If I had spent £12 ( same as the charity shop one), us the second worth £43. Mmmmmm. Gulp.

Guess it depends how much wear I get out of them. First one I can find leggings with for school, easy!.

Supersimkin2 · 01/11/2019 07:16

Cut the loops off if you don't want to belt it - just unpick the little seams. You can move more without a belt, I find.

Dress 2 looks as if it were made for you. You'll wear it for 30 years.

RickOShay · 01/11/2019 07:32

I like the first one as well, and think it would look good with a belt. Fairly narrow. Ankle boots look good, if possible maybe think about a Chelsea boot style.
Top purchasing Grin

Miniloso · 01/11/2019 07:36

Both look great. Second one I’d wear with high heels.

MoltonSilver · 01/11/2019 08:32

They're both lovely but the charity probably could have done with the £12. It's a bit unfair to be miffed at their prices.
