Dressing for Christmas markets in Cologne

Hi, after some advice for a weekend trip to Cologne in mid December. Really not sure how cold to expect it to be? Wondering if my usual leather ankle boots will suffice or will I need some lined ones? Have seen some fur lined ankle boots at Next I like. Or do I need a longer boot? I will take a thermal T-shirt and either leggings or tights under jeans.

Thanks

When we went it was “cold in England” cold - frosty but comfortable. I had DMs one year, small heeled leather ankle boots the next, and was perfectly comfortable. DH came so we had to go into lots more bars than I would have done alone, but the markets have the usual hot drinks and snacks - it was a bit cold stopped and eating, but much more fun.
Have a great time!

It varies, in my experience. I’ve been to lots of German and Austrian Christmas markets over the years had everything from like a winter’s night in the UK, that is, maybe around freezing or a few degrees above, to minus 12. I’d say probably yes to the lined boots (I’ve just bought some on the basis of an upcoming winter trip to Germany) and plenty of thermals. It may sound obvious, but a Christmas market means being outside potentially for hours, and you won’t enjoy it if you’re cold.

We go to the Berlin Christmas markets a lot. While the markets themselves are cosy with mulled wine and outdoor heaters, getting to and from them can be bitterly cold. Ive never felt cold like it one December. My phone stopped working it was that freezing. Plus the ground is so cold so your feet really feel it. Id recommend nice and cosy boots.
