I hate tights

Basically I hate any clothing that is not cotton so anything completely polyester (or whatever they're made of) is dreadful. Add to the fact that they never fit. I'm large and if I get them big enough to fit my hips they are either bagging round my ankles or the crotch is near my knees. So really uncomfortable any way you look at it.

None of this would be a problem - I can wear skirts without tights in the summer if I like and wear trousers the rest of the year. But this Christmas we'll be away and I will like to wear a nice dress. And no way that's going to look good with pasty and seriously scarred legs sticking out below.

Should I try to wear anything it will need to be fairly thick as to add to the whole issue I have dreadful toenails which would destroy average thickness tights.

Is there an answer to this? I will happily go to a chiropodist to tame my toenails but maybe there's an alternative.

How long is the dress? I don't like tights either, so wear long socks instead. No one can tell the difference unless I tell them. Grin The bonus is they're thicker and you can find ones with decent cotton content.

Shitonthebloodything · 27/10/2019 19:17

Go to a chiropodist for your toenails if they are past what a pedi can fix and buy some snag tights. They are amazing.

DonPablo · 27/10/2019 21:41

Snags are your friend. I bloody love mine.

HabbyHadno · 27/10/2019 21:44

I second Snags. They're brilliant, very comfy and never fall down or get a saggy crotch.

PastTippingPoint · 27/10/2019 21:48

Another one who has come to brag about my Snag tights. They are honestly the best pair of tights I've ever owned! I work 13 hour shifts in mine and they are so comfy I don't even feel like I'm wearing them Smile

totallyradllama · 27/10/2019 21:58

M and s do 40 denier fine cotton tights

But also yy to snag tights

FreezerBird · 27/10/2019 22:00

Adding to the chorus for snags.

peachgreen · 27/10/2019 22:01

Yup, Snags. So comfy.

confusedandemployed · 27/10/2019 22:01

Yeah Snags

pickingdaisies · 27/10/2019 22:08

Love m&s fine cotton tights, but you'll definitely have to get your toenails sorted first!

dontgobaconmyheart · 28/10/2019 02:05

I must be weird- I bloody love tights and find them so comfortable, I keep them on when I get home, sometimes just put a (long) PJ top over them and wear as if they're lounge wear Blush. I've definitely also worn them to bed quite happily in the winter when its freezing Blush. Maybe I'm just so lazy that it seems more convenient than leggings and separate socks.

Am off to look at snags!

Reddishang · 28/10/2019 08:38

Snags or mns are nice fit n comfy x

CherryPavlova · 28/10/2019 08:43

I too dislike tights that feel too nylon or that don’t stay in place.
M&S Velvet touch autograph tights are good. Extra cost outweighed by durability.
Heist do good tights in different sizes.
Snag do a range of tights in different colours and sizes.

alienm · 28/10/2019 12:37

If you're wearing boots with a dress, I'd wear leggings and socks, much easier, and less poly than tights. The other option would be to get cotton knit tights, White Stuff do quite nice ones.

KTay1982 · 28/10/2019 13:02

I love Spanx Tight End Tights (high waisted version) They are hosiery, not shapewear. They are expensive (£30) but do last longer if you look after them. I’ve had 2 pr Spanx black opaques for 5 years. Always better to pay more for tights and sheers, cheap ones sag and are ill fitting. I had to buy a pr of cheap sheers this weekend just gone as didn’t have time to order my faves, ended up taking them off and chucking in the bin half way through the day!
Another option you also might consider is thigh high stay ups or with a garter belt xx

GrumpyHoonMain · 28/10/2019 13:06

Natural fibres don’t tend to suit larger body types and it’s doubly so with tights - the reason you’re getting the nora batty look is because they often do stretch after the first wear and aren’t really designed for pear shapes.

You need high waisted nylon tights with cotton gussets or even stockings.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 28/10/2019 15:45

Also a massive fan of snag tights, comfiest best fitting tights I’ve ever worn, I’ve got ten pairs so far.

Crunched · 28/10/2019 16:04

Just ordered 3 pairs of Snag tights on the basis of this thread. What a great website.
Hope they are as good as you all say.

Pikachoob · 28/10/2019 16:09

I don’t really like snag - they’re great because I’m very tall and they do fit me but I don’t like the feel of them. Mind you they’re the only tights I’ve ever found that fit me well so...

KondoKonvert · 28/10/2019 16:09

Snags are great!

M&S gives me the rage...according to their size guide, they can't cater for me at 5'11 at a size 16.

Northernlurker · 28/10/2019 18:51

Op get some snags. I'm a size 22 and they are perfect.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/10/2019 10:58

To the person who mentioned long socks - how do they stay up?
My grandmother got me long socks for school and the kids called me Nora Batty.

TileFloors · 29/10/2019 11:10

I love knee-length socks and wear them from about October to May under all my trousers because I have some weird thing where if my calves get cold I get unbearable cramps in them. I find they stay up fine. I wear bamboo ones from Sock Shop, which I get quite cheap on amazon, or thermal ones from M&S if it’s really cold. I do wear tights with dresses and skirts, though. I have had thigh-length socks and they’re more hit and miss, I think they need to fit pretty well to stay up without cutting mercilessly into your thighs.

potatoeseverywherepot · 29/10/2019 11:56

Do snag tights feel like regular tights? The reason I hate tights is largely because they all feel so micro fibre-y and catch on bits of dry skin which makes me boak.

MrsBennetsnerves · 29/10/2019 12:41

I tried Snags recently. They were the most comfortable tights I have ever tried as a tall size 20. They are also quite soft to the touch. The downside is that they made me slightly sweaty around the waist. I would buy them again but I wish they would make them in cotton too.
