Starting to use blusher

Any tips on starting to use blusher? I've never put blusher on myself, but I have a photo of me as a bridesmaid with it on and would now like to try it myself. Having worn very natural look makeup until now (early 40s) I think I might have to ditch the less is more attitude.
I have pale skin, hair is naturally mousy brown (so darkish brown eyebrows) and dyed red. Eyes are blue/grey.

I would start by watching some youtube videos for application tips. I'm in my mid 40's and completely changed my makeup routine at the beginning of the year and watched lots of Lisa Eldridge videos. Budget depending, go along to a Boots No7 counter or Space NK (or your favourite makeup brand counter) and ask for their advice. They'll help you choose a colour to suit you.
