I have a new job where I need to wear black. It is in retail. I need to put together a mixture of clothes which will look smart, fashionable but at the same time functional and comfy. I need to look quite polished and presentable at the same time.

I have been out of the workplace in casual clothes and looking after young DC so need some help desperately.

i would get some trousers like these, a few tops like these, a dress like this (which you can wear with leggings or tights) and a staple pair of shoes

all the best with your new job! x

Congratulations!

To begin with, save yourself time and hassle by sticking to a uniform. Perhaps a slim shirt (sleeves rolled up neatly) tucked into slim cropped trousers (don’t forget a simple belt), or a mock neck jumper with pencil skirt, it might depend on what flatters your body shape or height.

I see a lot of retail staff go for simple ballet-style flats but, besides it being awful for your feet, they quickly go scruffy around the edges... it looks bad real fast. Some simple black leather/suede-look lace up brogues (asos do some) are smarter and go well with cigarette trousers or jeggings. If you prefer flats the more structured type (the sort that come with a silver buckle across the toe area?) would probably hold up better and look chic.

Try and check all your blacks match! Sounds silly but as someone whose wardrobe is 90% black I’m telling you it can make a simple outfit to have everything the same shade (or even tone!) of black. Sometimes I fix this by sticking all my items in the wash with that Dylon black dye stuff (can find in Quality Save or supermarket).
