What one thing has made the biggest difference to how you look?

I'm in my late 40s and I'm looking and feeling better than I have in years (possibly ever!)

I'm now wondering what else I can do to keep going in this direction - to keep improving with age.

What's the one thing you've done or do that you think makes the biggest positive difference to the way you look?

I'm struggling to answer this myself tbh! I'd suspect it's a combo of being happy and fulfilled (quite a change from being the stressed out workaholic control freak that I was!), 18:6 fasting and a plant-based diet... but who knows really?!

Sarcelle brilliant advice. Have screenshot it to remind myself

Daisyboobooboo · 27/10/2019 01:17

Sleep and lots of it, facial oil rather than any of the products of wonder on the chemist shelf , face exercise and at least 10 varieties of fruit and veg per day.

I really really need to lose about four stone but feel completely defeated at the thought of it.
I think alcohol and sugar are the biggest ageing factors, along with lack of hydration and poor diet. I really believe fizzy drinks are the devil too. I’ve never drunk them.
^

For me it's been lower carb higher fat.

So for example today I've had:

Breakfast :
Scrambled eggs
Greek yog and low sugar apple compote
Lots of coffee

A massive bowl of homemade veg, ham and lentil soup (onion, carrot, turnip, yellow split peas, ham, crushed tomatoes, chicken stock)
Few slices ham
Chunk of brie

An apple mid afternoon
Some cottage cheese

Homemade chilli and roasted squash for dinner
Glass red wine

I know we all sound like broken records with the bloody low carb thing but it's the only thing that works for me. I eat porridge for breakfast, I'm starved. I eat eggs, I'm not. I have meat and two veg for dinner I'm fine all night, I have Spag bol my stomach is growling within the hour.

I was looking for this thread yesterday and couldn't find it! Do glad it's back in Active Threads!

Isotretinoin. Its made my skin as smooth as a skating rink and Ultrasun spf 50 everyday. I've always had a good diet and I walk 3 miles most days. I look good for a woman in her 60s. Botox might improve me but I'm scared of looking ridiculous.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 27/10/2019 06:34

Weightlifting for me too. I’ve lost about 11lbs over the last year, but it looks like more than that. I’m so much stronger too and it feels great being more capable. I’ve never been more confident in my own skin.
I hate cardio, but strength training for me is just wonderful. Looking forward more improvements as I continue.

LazyFace · 27/10/2019 07:22

Breastfeeding...

Scarybennet · 27/10/2019 07:50

Ohchristmastree can you tell me more about weightlifting please? Do you do a specific class or have a personal trainer?

Squigean · 27/10/2019 07:53

I'd love to have clear skin. Loathe the constant massive white heads - unlike the rest of me can't cover up or dress to improve my face

Blingandrings · 27/10/2019 08:12

Facial yoga?

Bluerussian · 27/10/2019 08:16

Carry on as you are and enjoy being well and attractive. You will probably feel and look much the same in ten years.

Upupandiwent · 27/10/2019 08:42

This is a brilliant thread. I agree with weight loss and maintaining it. Not only dies it make my body look more youthful, it also have a my face just have a better shape, and less doughy looking.
I need to exercise more, especially weights. Intersted in trx but not sure how that works. I'll look on YouTube.
Facial oil and exercises sound really interesting.

Bluesheep8 · 27/10/2019 08:47

autumnrose "then my face fell in like a soufflé".....that's brilliant!! Grin
Mine would have to be revitalash eyelash serum. Pricey but so worth it.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 27/10/2019 09:08

A good skincare routine.

I wear clothes that suit me, rather than cutting edge fashion.

Eva Fraser has a book on facial exercises on Amazon

Lhastingsmua · 27/10/2019 17:00

@Dustybun, what was your oral posture like before that out of curiosity?

I always leave my teeth apart as I grind my teeth!

I'm not Ohchristmastree but I do lift weights. I have hit my target of being able to dead lift double my body weight.

I have tried personal trainers... four in total. Apart form the first one, none seemed willing to push me enough. I have got my best results from joining a gym that offers small group training. The benefits (for me) are a degree of competition and a good social aspect. It's fun. I go most days and enjoy it.

However, as I said at the start of the thread, simply losing weight has made the biggest difference the way I look.

Arms are pretty easy. Try doing planks, both low (on elbows) and high (on palms). Dips - lower yourself while supporting your weight from behind, on a bench or similar. Light weights - arms straight out, doing small circles, then reverse, then pulse up and down.

If you have enough space, install a TRX at home - I can't recommend it enough. Pretty cheap and incredibly versatile.

mumsie2019 · 27/10/2019 17:49

Good diet
Drink lots of water
Light to moderate Daily exercise for mind and body
Face Moisturiser
Nice hair cut and hair colour to suit your complexion
As another said a good bra definitely
Dress to suit your age and shape
Botox no way! Yuk

MarshaBradyo · 27/10/2019 18:08

The two biggest things are hair cut and good colour and weight

Pandainmyporridge · 27/10/2019 18:14

I use the TRX at the gym but I just lean backwards and then pull myself up, bit like a rowing motion. I'm guessing there must be more that can be done with it!

EntropyRising · 27/10/2019 18:35

You can work, I think, literally every muscle group with a TRX. It's just an attachment to the wall with various bands. That plus a yoga matt is really all you need for strength training.

Shalom23 · 27/10/2019 18:36

Botox
