Warm, not too thick girl’s coat?

My DD (8) hates wearing thick bulky coats, to the point where she won’t wear one at all. Can anyone recommend a warm but not too thick child’s coat (ideally with hood but not essential). We’ve tried thin puffer styles and she hates those too! So maybe something wool or cotton-y (with lining) would be good... thanks in advance!

Just bumping this for the evening crowd...

How about a quilted jacket. That'd give some warmth without bulk. I googled barbour and they have some around £50 but annoyingly labelled as boys.

I’ve bought the duffel style coats from vertbaudet when DD was that age. Similar to this. It was decently warm (but not the warmest for snow type days) because of the fleecy lining. They have other similar coats with a faux fur trim hood but we have never been fans of that in our house so tend to go for the non fur options. The reason I chose it over similar coats in other shops was the fact it was machine washable. I do advise sizing up as they run small.

My dd is the same and it's very difficult as most shops sell those puffball duvet type coats that once zipped up makes her feel claustrophobic Grin

I've got her a swing duffel coat (eBay) and she seems ok with it..... so far!

Lovely ideas thank you all!

I’ve realised I’ll probably have to take her to some actual shops so she can decree which coats feel not too bulky Hmm

These are great starting points for what to look for...

My 4 year old is the same. I got her a black padded anorak from next which should keep her warm but not bulky at all.

@Yellowbeetlebluebeetle good luck! If you dd is as fussy as mine id take her school backpack too (if she uses one) as we can get the "it's comfortable" in the shop, as soon as we are heading out to school with the backpack it suddenly becomes unbearable for both of us Grin

Yellowbeetlebluebeetle · 21/10/2019 07:44

@ellieboolou33 yes genius idea! This is exactly what she complains about - the rucksack and coat being somehow incompatible...

@WindyScales a padded anorak is a v good idea. I think we need to avoid anything with 'puff' but I think fleece lined or similar could work well...

I would try camping type coats. Trespass and the like.

I was on a similar quest and ended up with a parka type one from M&S.

My tip is to look online and order coats that look suitable for click and collect. Go, try them on and leave.

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 21/10/2019 07:50

Trespass. They're coats are not at all bulky or puffy but just as warm as a puffy jacket.

Mine also had verdaubet duffle's they are gorgeous and warm (but not at all waterproof)

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 21/10/2019 08:01

I'll add i also have a girl like that. We have some uniqlo packable down coats they are an absolute life saver for the days when there would otherwise be a debate whether she should wear a coat at all. Its small enough to shove it in a bag just in case. They don't feel too puffy either. There are much better quality ones but for the price uniqlo are good while they are growing.

In case anyone else is looking for something similar... I've gone for a fleece lined anorak from Boden (click and collect at John Lewis) with DD approval :)

Seems warm and lightweight plus offers some rain protection and a nice print. Not cheap though! Fingers crossed...

I've also ordered this (cheaper) one on click and collect - hedging my bets!

Hopefully one of these will seal the deal and I can stop googling 'warm girls coats' for at least a year or so Hmm
