The short skirt

It never really goes out of fashion does it?
Not to everyones taste, of course, and we all have differing body types, and lifestyles, but they are truly versatile, if you like them.

I was thinking about the recent trend for midi styles, and realised that minis have been in short supply in the shops for about 20 yrs, but they never really drop out.

I saw an older lady on the train in lake district last year, and another in Liverpool, both wearing short skirts, tights, good boots, gorgeous wool tops/coats, really chic and warm and totally age appropriate - they were well over 60.

And younger girls too, there are a few more than usual around town. A change from the skinny jean crowd.

They never seem to age do they?
They’re adaptable, can be dressed up or down, and depending upon how you feel about your legs/religion, etc, kind of ageless

I as I said in the midi thread, I either wear very maxi or very mini. Anything in between doesn't seem to suit me.

I've never been a slave to fashion though.

Oh yes, I love short, or shortish skirts. I have bought no midi skirts this Autumn, but have bought 4 short skirts and a shortish dress. I feel very wedding attendee in a midi dress. I'm in my 50s and have good toned legs, that I work out hard, and I don't want to hide myself away. Plus I think midi dresses/skirts have had their shapeless day really

I’ve never managed to look good in skirts above the knee, though I wish I did! I’m a size 10 and my legs aren’t bad at all (I’m a runner) but somehow I always look awful in them. I tried on a lovely corduroy mini recently just to see, and no, I looked terrible. I think it must be because I’m a sort of tank shape, big boobs but very little waist, and a short skirt somehow makes me look utterly shapeless.

I once owned a sort of tulip dress when they were in, that came to around mid-thigh, and that was ok probably because it wasn’t meant to be fitted at the waist, but it’s literally the only short skirted outfit I’ve ever worn. I do love skirts, but it’s midis or maxis all the way for me, unfortunately!

I love a short skirt and am glad to see lots back in the shops. I'm an apple so have the legs for them. Depending on the fit (some are tighter round the middle), I either wear a shirt tucked in, a waist length sweater or a looser top which covers my midriff.

Musicforsnorks · 20/10/2019 13:23

I like the shirt tucked in thing too. I sometimes wear a dark denim mini with a white oxford shirt tucked in , black tights and patent shoes. Kind of minimal-preppy. Sorta thing Grin

Wish i had runners legs!

I like short skirts but I really really struggle to know what tops to put with them.

It pretty much always ends up being just a plain white or black t-shirt or long sleeved top or a white button down blouse. And then do I tuck the top in or out. It's a minefield.

I think it's hard because if you go with coloured top, it's really hard to find the exact same shade that goes with the skirt.

It's easy to match tops to jeans and dresses need to matching but skirts are really difficult to wear which is a shame as I have so many I like but I struggle to wear them.

Advice welcome Smile

@which1 I tend t-stick, largely, to a minimal colour palette. So. Plain navy cord, dark grey skirts, etc. I don’t wear much pattern but my tops tend to go well with the colours I have in the skirts.

Jeans allow for more invention I think, literally anything goes with them, and they allow you to make statements with the rest of your clothes/accessories whereas skirts and dresses are more ‘fussy’ in that sense.

If skirt has a pattern or colour mix, try a plain slouch tucked merino jumper, or tee - depending on season. Most midi skirts look perfect with a plain coloured tee in summer.

Coats are another issue entirely which is where I struggle.

Totally OP, thrilled its autumn because I can wear them again. I only like the look with tights/boots though so don't wear them in the summer.

My go to combo is tucking in a shirt/blouse or jumper, tights, boots, and a midi coat/scarf or trench over the top to take away that feeling I'm out in a short skirt. If I want to be smarter I simply add a low heeled boot or something patent, and use a tight fitting more lightweight knit tucked in.

I have quite a collection Blush but it's just such an easy grab and go outfit for me, that looks far smarter and cooler than it has permission to be when it's so comfortable.
