How big is too big for a handbag for nights out?

And should a handbag for nights out be smaller than your day time hand bag? I always seem to have so much stuff but don't want to look like I've got the kitchen sink with me. What can I get away with?

@ElspethFlashman I pay for the “tea“ but ask them not to use their tea bag/leaves ... they still have all charges connected with providing : cup, pot, milk, power for hot water, labour, rent and rates etc - I insist I pay - just can’t abide terrible tea. Peely Wally English Breakfast tea after a three course meal ? No thank you! When I check the bill if they haven’t charged I add it to the tip. It’s about taste not tightness. Apologies for sidetracking on your thread OP.

@MrsTishellsNeckBrace our of interest what tea bags do you use?

MrsTishellsNeckBrace · 20/10/2019 15:04

I am partial to Yorkshire Gold. I don't drink anything anything you could still read the venue menu through when brewed. Grin

Really depends what sort of night out you're talking about...if a gig (or dancing) I'd take a cross body bag. Weather would dictate size e.g. do I need umbrella, hat etc. Any other sort of night out I just take whatever bag I feel like and whatever I might need.

Has to fit in a can of hairspray and a brush though

managedmis · 20/10/2019 21:16

spare pair of knicks

managedmis · 20/10/2019 21:17

take comb, repack a couple of wipes into small reusable containers. I have a sewing kit. A small cigar tin of tea and sugars. Allergy tablets and pain killers. Some plastic gloves in a kinder egg. A condensed purse. A spare kinder egg for change. In winter a Carmex tube. Phone. It all fits in a clutch.

A clutch?! ShockGrin

@MrsTishellsNeckBrace bloody hell, I’m an actual A&E nurse practitioner and I’ve never felt compelled to take a pair of gloves out with me.

I do have a mask in the glove box of my car in case I needed to give rescue breaths at the scene off an accident but that’s as far as it goes.

Be careful anyway, someone might think the kinder egg and gloves are for putting drugs up your bum, that’s how they get them into prisons.

Lhastingsmua · 21/10/2019 01:09

I’m not sure what others are defining a night out as here? It’s important because you’d probably carry different items if you’re going clubbing/raving vs dinner for example.

If I was going clubbing I certainly wouldn’t bring 90% of the things mentioned on this thread as these items are simply unnecessary. Especially as I go out often, and would typically be out for an extended period of time so I know what items I’d actually reach for and what would just be unnecessary bulk. I certainly wouldn’t take a sewing kit nor tea & sugar with me.

LittleLongDog · 21/10/2019 09:12

@managedmis yours is the funniest list yet.

Aprilcherry04 · 21/10/2019 15:50

Really curious about the latex gloves......

When out on the town I tend to wear a small cross body bag which holds about the same as a large clutch but keeps my hands free.

LaPampa · 21/10/2019 17:22

I often take a bigger bag I leave in the cloakroom (coat, scarf, umbrella, make up, all that stuff on the list - I don’t usually take tea mind you) and then a smaller clutch/ zipped bag which I have lipstick, cash, phone, driving licence etc which I take with me.

Itsjustmee · 22/10/2019 10:39

I have a longchamp le pillage mini clutch bag and longchamp make up bag that I use when I go out
In the mini bag I can fit bottle of channel perfume
i Phone keys small deodorant /body spray and small purse and small scrunched up top if it’s cold

In the make up bag I can fit lipsticks large blusher brush and coins
Bag is small but perfect for a night out

I also just take a clutch bag containing:

credit card
$100 cash just in case
lip balm
alcohol hand sanitizer (mini tube)
phone

I have a large first aid kit in the car, and I'm never that far from my car so I leave everything else, coat etc in there.

EatenByDinosaurs · 22/10/2019 12:59

Meant to add I flat out refuse to take makeup out with me, if it doesn't have staying power (tested during errands on hot days) it gets ditched for another brand/item, can't be doing with that with the weather in my part of the US Grin

Love51 · 22/10/2019 22:20

I'm amazed that people carry purses on nights out. Don't you just shove your card of choice and maybe some notes into your phone case?
Phone
Key
Lipstick and concealer (I rarely even use the concealer).
Perhaps a small hairbrush.
Clean pants if you aren't going home.

I wear contact lenses so used to take a case with solution in. Now I always go home, but also have lenses I can sleep in.

BusterGonad · 23/10/2019 03:08

I have small going out bags but these days I can't be arsed with them, my money purse is huge as my notes need to be pristine, I can't go out without a bit of make up, phone and charger, a few headache pills etc as I get older I'm not prepared to be without my essentials so I usually just take my day bag!
