Another winter coat disappointment!

I ordered this coat:
www.navabi.co.uk/product/hooded-wool-coat-59878/?colorcode=2400

I am so disappointed! It looks cheap, it’s much thinner than I initially expected and despite being the right size (I ordered slightly bigger to allow for massive jumpers) makes me look like a giant sausage because it seems to be clinging to the body, if that makes sense.

I love the shape, the length and the massive hood. Can you help me find something similar please? Size 18 and tall, budget is £200. TIA

This could be my perfect coat:

DP says it’s an investment and I should get it. He’s a keeper Grin
I really hope sizing is generous.

Max Mara sizing is definitely generous. I’ve always had to size down. The quality is lovely.

HotCrossPun1 · 18/10/2019 07:08

La Redoute.

My last coat was from there and I’ve been pleased with it.

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/10/2019 07:39

eBay! I've bought a few coats from Hobbs on there, all in excellent condition.

Destinysdaughter · 18/10/2019 07:45

Debenhams had some nice coats when I popped in a few days ago. They've also got a 30% off promotion on coats and jumpers at the moment!

Trewser · 18/10/2019 07:49

That MaxMara coat is real fur, if that bothers you (and it probably should).

Tableclothing · 18/10/2019 07:52

Arket might be worth a try.

www.zalando.co.uk/anna-field-curvy-classic-coat-black-ax821u00a-q11.html

Has hood, 40% wool and free returns. Got to be worth a pint to see what it looks like on?

OllyBJolly · 18/10/2019 08:00

I wish you hadn't posted that @Floralmoral

That is gorgeous. It would have to be a neutral colour to really be an investment, wouldn't it? I can picture myself brightening up the train station platform in the morning in that sumptuous orange.....

Crazyladee · 18/10/2019 08:02

I've picked up two gorgeous coats last week.

A gorgeous black wool one from Next that cost £62. It's a dressier one so I'll save it for best.

And a more casual woolen grey one from TK Maxx that cost £24.99. Its warm as toast and looks great on.

I couldn't wear fur. Or spend nearly a grand on a coat when there are so many cheaper ones around that are just as nice. I'd be too scared of wearing it!!

Floralmoral · 18/10/2019 08:04

Trewser Oh no, real fur Angry. Thank you for pointing it out. I completely missed that, excited by all the wool and pretty-ness.
The search continues.

Floralmoral · 18/10/2019 08:07

Crazyladee I would love a good TKmaxx find but I’ve been to three different ones (more than once..) in the past 2 weeks and had no luck. I would have been easier if I were a 12 or 14, but big chest and big bum unfortunately do not help Sad

Gloverall duffles are one-third off at the moment. My last one lasted over ten years before becoming a bit too tatty for work (and they have hoods!)

www.gloverall.com/collections/women

I know duffles aren’t to everyone’s taste but they are a design classic

Floralmoral · 18/10/2019 08:10

OllyBJolly yes I was looking at the black one but now that it’s been pointed out to me that it’s real fur, I’m a bit ashamed of myself for having missed it and I so over the coat... the search continues.

Really?! That's pretty shocking. Yep - thanks, you've just saved me almost a grand!

championquartz · 18/10/2019 09:11

I bought this charcoal coat recently. 80% wool, hangs nicely and filled my dark coat hole-in-the-wardrobe. I tried it on reluctantly as it looks like nothing online and on the hanger. Nice on tho. Massimo is worth a look this season, they're having a great season.

Plenty of the M&S coats are lined and are excellent this year. Only the double faced fabric ones are unlined. A tiny minority.

Cos have decent coats. Arket too. They have a lively tweed coat. Cos in particular have a high wool content. Hobbs are always decent and you cannot go wrong.

dontgobaconmyheart · 18/10/2019 10:18

Good for you for turning your back on the Max Mara coat OP, appalled that it's real for.
Nearly 1k for a coat isn't an investment though, if it's getting worn daily in inclement weather nothing will stay nice for long. I'd have a look in the likes of Reiss, Jaeger, French connection and Ted Baker. I find they often do classic styles but a better quality than generic high street and usually I get a few years wear out of them before they no longer look smart.

banivani · 18/10/2019 10:43

It's going to be hard to find a wool coat with a hood I think. Step outside the wool box into the land of parkas and similar and there's more options. Unless you'd accept a duffel coat, since they are always hooded. You could find really good ones second hand maybe (always harder in the bigger sizes of course). Unexpectedly I found a 50% wool duffel coat at Bonprix. www.bonprix.co.uk/products/long-wool-duffle-coat/_/A-975344_14 On the Swedish site it's marked as 50 % wool, on the UK as "wool rich". I blame Brexit. ;) Personally I have a rule to never go under 75 % wool.

If you're only looking for something to tide you over until you lose a bit of weight I mean.

evilharpy · 18/10/2019 11:08

Oh goodness. I'm so disappointed in Max Mara :(

Purplealienpuke · 28/10/2019 19:04

I'm larger in the nork department. Last year I bought two coats... one from M&S and one from The House of Bruar (Ruin for those of us in Scotland) ...
Both are fully lined and very warm and wool. Neither have hoods....
I'm unsure if Bruar have an online shop, I'd assume they do. Worth a look I'd say.

Musicforsnorks · 28/10/2019 23:27

Best I’ve seen, and I’ve been doing serious research Grin are at jigsaw and massimo dutti. Around the £250 mark but nowhere near as gobsmackingly cheeky as, say, all saints charging £400 for an unlined 50% wool one.

For sizing, I always find toast coats swamp me - I’m small - and would love to shop there if I was a larger size.

Everywhere else is simply crap.
