What should I wear on TV!

I may be appearing on a telly quiz show soon. What should I wear?

I'm 5'2, have put on a stone since I broke a bone in my foot so I'm a 12-14, autumn colouring, short brown hair. Rough budget of £100 but could stretch for something fab and versatile.

Thank you!

No patterns! I’d say strong bold colour with whatever the most flattering neckline is on you as that’s what people will see

Very exciting, can you say what show??

StCharlotte · 11/10/2019 20:36

I have no idea what I'd wear on TV but the contestants on University Challenge and Madtermind seem spectacularly badly dressed. So don't follow their example!

I think some patterns are okay. Stripes are definitely a no-no.

No stripes or patterns. A top or dress in a colour and neckline that suit you best but not too low cut. Wear heels if you're behind a podium type thing.

  • Mastermind obviously. Clearly I have no place on there!

I think a lot of producers tell people to wear a block colour......I was watching The Apprentice and none of the girls wear a pattern of any sort.

I would concentrate on good hair and make up and a fabulous necklace. Block colour shirt and trousers.

Bright colours, no patterns, some jewellery, maybe more of a silk finish. I think things that give you a sort of halo and frame you look good on tv. And your hair has to be super shiny and to look good. If you are sitting down and the lower part won’t be visible, than you don’t need to concentrate on that area too much.

Strong bold colour as others have said. Blue tends to look good on TV. What colour is the set behind you? Something contrasting would look best.

The wardrobe department should contact you with some do's and don'ts, usually tell you to bring a selection of outfits so they / director can decide what will look best.

Simple neckline and a casual jacket - think liz Lemmon from 30 rock

Oh it depends. If behind a podium/desk or standing I would wear a dress but it you have to sit (who wants to be a millionaire styles) I would wear trousers.

I would look at boden ottomen dresses in petite. They have various style and colours.

I used to work in TV (not on camera!) and agree with the advice re block colours. If you are a floral person, a bold print is generally okay, but anything ditsy or fussy tends to get lost. Stripes and checks can strobe a bit. If you are wearing makeup, it needs to be a lot heavier than you usually wear - people who you see on TV and think “she looks nice” are actually full-on drag queens before they go on air! The studio lights can get really hot, so be mindful of that in terms of sweaty clothes and shiny face.
