New coat smells of putty - wwyd

Bought this parka last week from Mint Velvet for an upcoming weekend away as weather wise looks like I'm going to need something that withstands a bit of rain but all my other waterproof coats are too warm for Autumn or only fit for dog-walking. Anyway didn't notice anything when it arrived & tried on. Put it on a hanger to let packing creases drop and DH mentioned funny smell in bedroom. Didn't pay much attention. Put new coat on next day and whilst out could definitely smell putty but again didn't attribute it to coat. Hung it back on hook at back door & later noticed the putty/linseed smell again and realised it was the coat. I've tried giving it a blast of fresh air on the line but it still lingers. Has anyone had this before - is it some sort of waterproofing? Nothing mentioned in description. Anything else I can try? Or should I return it? Would MV take it back as it's been worn and I no longer have the tags.
