B12/Folate Deficiency - Hairloss....

Hi,

I’ve been having hairloss for the last 5/6 months and blood tests have picked up a B12 and folate deficiency. Has anyone else had this? With hairloss?

Thanks

Both are neededfor healthy hair, but maybe there is another reason, what did your Dr say? has he given you any supplements or advised what to do
Are you on any medication, or HRT that can have caused it
Is your hair falling out in any pattern or all over thinness
Have you had a thyroid test, you don't say how old you are
I have been having hair loss for about 18 months ,but only really noticed it had got very bad to almost bald patches in the last 8-9 months
I am taking every vitamin going i think, and the hair i have is growing very fast, i think the Biotin is helping
Dieting or illness can also cause hair loss, as can having a baby, also stress, also low ferritin, can cause it
I finally saw a dermatologist yesterday, who has put mine down to stress, and i think he is right, although after taking a certain HRT a couple of months ago, even more fell out
You can google womens hair loss and see what yours is like, there are patterns of hair loss which might help you to identify why this is happening,
Zinc is necessary too for hair health as well

My hair noticeably got better when I got put on Thyroid meds, so as @princessTiasmum mentioned its definitely worth getting this checked out. I also found 'Plantur' shampoo and 'The Ordinary' hair serum for hair density helped (the serum is also good for eyebrows and eyelashes if applied with an eye makeup brush!). To be honest vitamins never really helped me, but then I was never tested to see if I had a deficiency.

@Wildwood6 I’m hypothyroid so I’m already on Levothyroxine too. Had all my bloods tested and it’s only the b12 and folate that are low x

Just been reading a thread on gransnet about someone who had hairloss, she got some biotin 10000 strength and her hair grew back and grew back curly, i think i'm going to up my biotin ,i'm taking 1000 dosage, and remaining hair grows almost overnight, i have cut it 3 times in 2 months and it's almost shoulder length now,, and i couldn't even grow it that long when i was young

I had quite a bit of hair loss through iron deficiency anaemia. I’m quite lucky in that although my hair strands are fine, I have a lot of hair so it wasn’t too noticeable to other people. It was actually one of the things that made me go get my blood levels checked. I had far too much hair coming out in the shower and on the brush every day, maybe about 4 times more than normal and it quickly adds up.

I found once I started taking the prescription supplements I stopped losing so much hair. It’s still not as full as it once was but I’d getting there. I suppose it takes time to grow back. I’ve also stopped getting pins and needles in my hands and legs and don’t feel cold all the time like I used to.

If your hair loss is noticeable it might be worth getting a style change/ haircut to disguise it. I’m sure most hairdressers have experience in this sort of thing.

Definitely not on any hormonal contraceptives? The progesterone only pill made my hair come out by the handful but it only started to fall several months after starting it (and probably low in iron at the same time). Stopping it and taking an iron supplement and I’m back to swishy hair but only after a couple of years!

The HRT my Dr put me on which he said would help my hair got much worse as the strong progesterone in it caused more hair loss
