Can anyone help with finding me the holy grail?

Its a bridesmaid dress for my difficult sister.

She is not conventional in what she wears and has some hang up about her figure (nothing wrong with it) and only ever wears baggy clothes. She refuses to wear anything cinched in at the waist and won't wear anything long as she is relatively short (like me, but I will be wearing long)

I'll be having two bridesmaids. One of which will be 14 and is very easy, she's just thrilled to be my bridesmaid. Colours will be either orange or blue - edging towards royal/cobalt blue but equally happy to go for a less bold shade.

I will be wearing a very understated flowy, festivally style dress so I am aiming for that for my bridesmaids.

My sister, given free reign, would go for this (pic) or pretty much anything from Cos (loose and sack like)

Or this style www.instagram.com/ceciliebahnsen/?igshid=7v8rjs44tsd0

I'm just not sure of the look for a bridesmaid with the style I'll be wearing.

I did find an orange dress from Zara, which may be a compromise. But what do you think?

www.zara.com/uk/en/embroidered-midi-dress-p05039470.html?v1=27504098&v2=1281698
It's quite long but my sister is keen and its the only thing I've fond that we both are okay with.

I can just imagine her being very 'out there' in all the pics. I don't care too much about that, I'm not precious about how it makes me look. But it might look odd in photos? Also, DP is raising eyebrows at her style choice and will put his foot down if he doesn't like it.

I think I will have to find my sister something, then model my other bridesmaid on whatever we find. But I just can't seem to find anything. Especially in blue or orange. Tempted to go for white/ivory with a hint of colour somehow...

Any thoughts or help? I'd love a bit of guidance! Grin

Well, to start with I don't think it is your dp's place to be 'putting his foot down' about your sister's choice of clothing. She's a bridesmaid, not a possession!
I think that if she is happy to wear the colour of your choice, let her pick the style. It's more important she is comfortable. You could maybe dye the white dress in your photo to get the colour right. It doesn't matter if the two bridesmaids wear completely different styles since they are completely different agesm

ladybee28 · 01/10/2019 15:24

Is that your 'difficult sister' in the pic?

And if so, does she know her face has been put up on the internet and labelled as such?

Thinkle · 01/10/2019 15:26

I think her style is classed as Scandi if that helps with your search. I also think you are being very very accommodating by the way.
If she wants something loose and you want something bridesmaidy then maybe something with a cape front?
The Zara dress is interesting (In a good way) for sure but I don’t know how you style it for bridesmaid.
Good luck

Frazzlerock · 01/10/2019 15:29

I think his reasoning is that the day isn't about her and it is becoming increasingly so in this dress debacle. He just wants me to be happy and for it to look 'right' and be our 'thing'.
I don't mind tooooo much what she wears but I don't want it to look hideous next to everyone else, you know? Maybe I made him sounds like a tyrant. He's really not, he's lovely Grin

I'm not sure what the dress is in the photo, it was taken from Instagram as an example. But good idea to find a white dress and dye it if we're having problems.

I've said to her to choose her own style but stick to our colours, but it's hard to get the style AND colour.

I will keep looking. We may have found something suitable since I first posted above but just need a bit of choice Smile

@ladybee28 haha, no! I wouldn't dare!
It is just an example. should have said above, but didn't think to mention it.
@Thinkle I've Googled Scandi clothing, but not having much luck. Thank you, yes I think I am too! But I'm pretty relaxed as it's my second marriage and it is just about the two of us (done the big wedding thing already). It will be DP's first so I think he'd like it to be just right.

I will keep searching! I'm just a bit blinded by dresses now and still haven't sorted my dress yet

This is 100%cotton and can be sized down quite a bit.... Would dye well!

Paddingtonthebear · 01/10/2019 15:45

I was a bridesmaid for my sister and I wore what she chose. She did ask my opinion but ultimately it was her choice because it was her wedding and she was paying for it all. Her other bridesmaids made a fuss about dresses and hair and frankly I thought they were rude and a PITA.

In your position I would ask your sister to come up with some ideas that suit her and the other bridesmaid and then you get the final say. People who are difficult should probably think of opting out of being involved with weddings, they have a tendency to think it is all about them when it’s the exact opposite.

TokyoSushi · 01/10/2019 15:53

I've just had a bit of a google and came across 'Japanese Mori Girl style' dresses, might be another term to google!

Frazzlerock · 01/10/2019 16:09

I like that @Thinkle! I have sent it to my sister, thank you!

@TokyoSushi I just googled. I don't know about my sister, but I have just found a few wedding dress contenders!
I love this, but its from China so I imagine tricky to post back if I don't like it: (awful link coming up)

I actually love the Zara dress for the bridesmaid dress......

Could you fashion your flowers in similar colours to tie everything in together?
The younger bridesmaid could wear a white dress with a sash of the same colour and flowers in her hair of orange and golds.

Think it would look amazing.

cathyandclare · 01/10/2019 16:15

I think that Zara one could be great if dyed. This isn't quite right, but maybe if sized up...
Ted Baker but you could tear the label out!

Frazzlerock · 01/10/2019 16:23

@Collision yes the flowers will be oranges and blues, wild flowers with lots of foliage. I love that idea for the younger bridesmaid, thank you!

@cathyandclare yes I can see if sized up that could work.

I have ordered two dresses. That orange Zara one and this blue Cos:

She loves the white one @Thinkle Smile

This is going to be such a fabulous & stylish wedding!

AliceLittle · 01/10/2019 16:44

The dress in the attached picture looks a lot like the Victoria Beckham dress. I wouldn't be surprised if there are multiple copies of it somewhere out there

Milkstick · 01/10/2019 18:14

I don't know whether it'll tick the right boxes but if you're still looking you could try the Gudrun Sjoden website, google will take you there.

Milkstick · 01/10/2019 18:20

Also ASOS do some maternity stuff that also doubles as loose fitting type dresses.

Milkstick · 01/10/2019 18:20

*tunic type that should say!

Kenworthington · 01/10/2019 18:21

Oh my GOD I LOVE that orange Zara dress. It’s super stylish and cool. Good choice!

NancyJoan · 01/10/2019 18:24

Choose a fabric you like, and get dresses made in the styles they choose. The dresses will match without being the same.

NancyJoan · 01/10/2019 18:26

The Zara dress is lovely, and if it’s too long you can have it altered.

SteelRiver · 01/10/2019 18:29

I love the blue Cos dress you posted, OP. What a fabulous shade! It would look striking with orange flowers for your wedding and it could definitely be worn again.

Frazzlerock · 04/10/2019 09:44

Arrghh the orange Zara was too small Sad and my sister said it cinches at the waist anyway and hadn't realised.
I was really warming to that idea!

Oh well, now waiting for the blue Cos to arrive...

@NancyJoan I like your idea but it sounds like an expensive thing to do?

@Milkstick I like your idea re maternity but it is a sore subject for me and triggers a whole host of emotions even seeing models with fake bumps Sad

I might order the white one @Thinkle linked above. Or this one might dye well too
