I saw the reception tomorrow in the schedule but I am expecting it to be more of a posh maxi than full on cocktail dress I will cross my fingers though

BlingLoving · 01/10/2019 16:55

I think the green dress works. And the belt is doing more of what it's supposed to do in terms of give her some definition. Possibly because there isn't a double row of buttons?

If they're flying back tomorrow the event can't possibly be too glamourous. And as I think I said before, cocktail dresses and formal frocks aren't really our thing in SA.

FelicityFlutterby · 01/10/2019 16:59

I also like the green dress, though I don't generally like a tie belt (on anyone - they just aren't to my taste for some reason). But that dress is quite lovely. I think single breasted looks nicer and less office worker-ish.

BigGlasses · 01/10/2019 17:14

I am a similar shape to Meghan (but about 3 stone heavier!) in that I have long slim legs and a short square torso. I rarely wear dresses as I just don't think they suit, seperates are a lot more forgiving. I like the green on her, though again I would probably avoid that shade personally as I am a sweaty betty and would get dark marks under the arms (an eternal problem of mine, I wonder how the royals avoid it)

I find these threads facinating with regards to what suits and what doesn't, its really made me think a bit more about my own clothes choices. But I don't envy the royals at all having to choose suitable, stylish clothes all the time, I would find it exhausting.

alldressedupinblue · 01/10/2019 17:23

I'm in love with Mary's look.

Ninkaninus · 01/10/2019 17:33

Yes I liked that very much too, very elegant and again, a great colour on her. Mary is generally very good at picking colours that suit her exceptionally well (or she might be lucky enough to be a true neutral who can wear pretty much everything). If you watch the footage Benedikte’s coat is a beautiful grey with a lovely sheen to it.

Rachelle11 · 01/10/2019 17:42

Meghan's hair and makeup always look stunning to me. I think she does a fabulous more natural makeup.
Her clothes never look right though to me. I agree her legs aren't her best feature. They are long and skinny but shapeless. And because she has a boxy torso they stand out more. Belt dresses are also not her friend. I imagine her thought is it will give her the appearance of a smaller waist but it seems to do the opposite. Her second wedding dress was amazing on her. Also she looks fabulous in slacks and jeans.

hopeishere · 01/10/2019 17:45

She loves a belted shirt / coat dress!! I think they're dreadful!! They're too tight over her bust.

TSSDNCOP · 01/10/2019 18:23

Oh good god. Stop with the belted dresses, they are awful on a short waist.

The sleeveless raincoat is a particularly hated item for me.

On a plus side, they are smashing it. The Fail has finally managed to dig up a non-story about Jag Land Rover shipping in some armoured cars. At no expense to the tax payer.

frugalkitty · 01/10/2019 18:31

Reading the DM at my parents earlier and thought you'd be interested in this.....taken from a serial about the Thatcher years, this demonstrates the difficulty facing women at the time who wanted to wear trousers to work.....all sounds a bit bonkers these days but I thought it suited our discussions here anyway.

RoseQuartzGlow · 01/10/2019 18:37

I think her shoes look too big because she has very narrow feet and long toes so they don't grip properly. I don't think her legs are her best feature. They are quite stick like without any shape. She seems to go for the same type of clothes all the time - belted dresses, beige, belted coats, white shirts, trousers that look a bit odd.Clothes that are too tight or far too big.

She needs some proper advice re shapes and colours, and a good dressmaker.

paradyning · 01/10/2019 18:40

Interesting they picked up on the car.....

peridito · 01/10/2019 18:42

Couldn't Meghan have shoes made to measure ?

AdaColeman · 01/10/2019 18:48

Apparently Megs deliberately wears her shoes a size or so too big, to allow for her feet swelling after standing/walking for long periods during events.

MotherofPearl · 01/10/2019 18:52

@beanaseireann re: that likeness between Marie and Mary - that's why Marie's called SWFM on these threads, for Single White Female Marie.

Like @TSSDNCOP I really detest the sleeveless belted raincoat dress. I think they are so unflattering. Something in a softer fabric that is less stiff would look far nicer imo.

MotherofPearl · 01/10/2019 18:54

And I love CPM's pink outfit - that hat is channeling Jackie Kennedy in a major way.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 01/10/2019 18:55

Couldn't Meghan have shoes made to measure ?

Well, she could, but imagine the furore in the Fail if she did!

For those willing to Google there are loads of articles saying that Meghan wears shoes that are too big for her for comfort reasons. It's a slebby red carpet thing, apparently. The trouble is, it's not compatible with Duchessy activities which involve a bit more walking about.

I agree the thing she really does get right is her make up (apart from an occasionally free hand with the bronzer!).

peridito · 01/10/2019 18:57

Ada that makes sense ,but isn't there a better soloution ? Innersoles that could be removed ? Two pairs in different sizes ? She looked rather wobbly walking from the car in the nude/beige shirtdress .

I felt for her ,coping with keeping the dress down and rather unbalanced in those shoes .

Ninkaninus · 01/10/2019 18:57

I really think it’s clear on the thread description that this is not a place for critiquing specifics of people’s ‘best/worst’ features. Why is it so important whether or not you think an individual’s legs/waist/boobs/bum/whatnot is their best feature? Why does it matter? Why should one dress to show off one’s best features? Does Meghan/Kate/whoever owe us a ‘perfect’ figure/‘perfect’ proportions/‘perfect’ anything?

I’ve no time for fashion tyranny.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 01/10/2019 18:58

Cross post Ada although you were more succinct than me!Grin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 01/10/2019 19:01

I agree, @Ninkaninus but a lot has been said on these very threads about Kate's physique without anyone getting tetchy. I'm sure the topic will move on.

Ninkaninus · 01/10/2019 19:05

That’s why I mentioned both. It’s unnecessary irrespective of who is being referenced.

Being perfect and only wearing things that ensure one is as close to a perfect ideal is not a female duty, even if one is a duchess/princess/Queen.

frugalkitty · 01/10/2019 19:07

To be fair, I think the figure comments are part of the reasoning as to why certain outfits/shapes/lengths etc do or don't work, rather than stand alone criticisms of anyone's features.

FelicityFlutterby · 01/10/2019 19:12

Sorry to derail, but I had to say YY to the pp who mentioned being over dressing to look slimmer! I also came to this conclusion recently, when I thought, "oh no, i can't wear those sorts of jeans as they'll make me look bigger". Then I realised how ridiculous that is and bought the damn jeans! I love them. They are cool and I don't care if I don't look slim in them. Ha!

Also agree with you nink. I wouldn't want to comment negatively on anyone's physique. It's just completely unnecessary. Commenting on their clothes is totally different and much more interesting.

Ninkaninus · 01/10/2019 19:15

Perhaps. But veering a little too far toward the unnecessary side of the spectrum, IMO. No need to start getting specific about ‘flaws’ when one could quite easily keep it general and still discuss proportions and cut/style/overall appearance.

Anyway I’m all done on my soapbox, back to fabulous frocks and terrific tiaras!
