I think it’s dependant on where they are. In Denmark, at least, the Queen, as host, enters last, as far as I understand it. I imagine the convention is much the same in the rest of Europe.

Not sure how the rest of it is worked out.

Laiste · 08/10/2019 14:53

Ooh really Ninkaninus? Now i've just said to DD (looking over my shoulder at thread) that i would guess the host country's queen would obviously go first, leaving the problem of the rest of them. I was wrong!

Ninkaninus · 08/10/2019 15:01

I’m guessing it’s to do with nobody keeping the Queen waiting or some such. And it stands to reason that in her own kingdom and on her own soil the Queen has the highest seniority, so if that’s the rule then she will attend any function last. But that’s only as far as I understand it! And mostly gleaned from videos of functions where IIRC the Queen always arrives last. I’ve never actually read about it, and I could be totally wrong. It might get more complicated than that when several heads of royal households and/or consorts are present.

Ninkaninus · 08/10/2019 15:03

(Must add when I say ‘the queen’ I’m referring to Margrethe. I don’t know whether it’s the same for HMQ or whether things are done differently here)

Leti in a snazzy snakeskin print dress!

banivani - Found the film - wait through the ads (two of them) and then enjoy haha www.expressen.se/nyheter/kungligt/silvia-om-sommaren-med-barnbarnen

I love how the other Royals studiously avoid that Princess Madeleine and Chris are having words over who should chase down Leonore (and Chris is obvious in his refusal to do so)

Spudlet · 08/10/2019 17:10

Jumping back a bit - ladies used to have contraptions that looked a bit like gravy boats for peeing into. They held them under their dresses while they stood up, then handed them over to a skivy to dispose of. No pants back in the day, remember! I’ll see if I can find the article I read about them!

Here we go - the bourdaloue!

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/10/2019 17:17

I certainly won't be looking at antique gravy boats the same way anymore!

You’d definitely want to give one a good scrub before wheeling it out for Sunday dinner! BlushShock

In terms of order, I think the oldest monarch goes first; although I don’t whether that’s longest serving or chronological age; because when Charles becomes a King, he will be a good couple of decades older but a more recent king than his European counterparts.

Anyway reason being, King Hussein of Jordan said that at an event in the 50s, he was the youngest Monarch so last. Then at one towards the end of his life; he was the oldest; so first!

WineOrGinOrBoth · 08/10/2019 17:58

@Spudlet Shock

Ninkaninus · 08/10/2019 18:08

Mind you that was the regency era. I think by the time of the Victorian heyday things had moved on a bit, thank goodness.

Still not going to be able to avoid that mental image next time I’m confronted with a gravy boat, though. Thankfully we use a cute little jug (NO ONE RUIN IT!!).

Ninkaninus · 08/10/2019 18:09

For gravy, that is. We use the cute little jug for gravy!

Bertrand, I've read the Longbourne book and I found it an interesting view of what life might have been like for the servants.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/10/2019 18:21

Glad you clarified @Ninkaninus Grin

Forgot to say I read last week that press were briefed that security is going to be v tight on W&K's Pakistan tour and events won't be announced ahead of schedule. Much like during their NI tour I suppose.

I'd never have thought of pairing tan shoes with that snakeskin dress Leti's wearing, but it really works. The obvious choice would have been black but that would have been much less interesting.

MotherofPearl · 08/10/2019 18:47

Speaking of books in that vein, I also enjoyed Alison Light's 'Mrs Woolf and the Servants: An Intimate History of Domestic Life in Bloomsbury.'

MotherofPearl · 08/10/2019 18:51

Max in a truly extraordinary brooch! I'm amazed it doesn't drag down the fabric of her top.

Horsemad · 08/10/2019 18:55

I really like the snakeskin dress and it goes so well with the tan shoes.

Hairydilemma · 08/10/2019 19:17

I love Leti’s dress too and totally agree about the tan shoes, look miles better than black.

Hairydilemma · 08/10/2019 19:18

I think overall Leti wins my best dressed royal most consistently. She wears the sort of things I’d wear if I was a more in shape, glossier version of myself Grin

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/10/2019 19:37

@Hairydilemma it's a toss up between her and CPM!
