So much size 12 shaming around and it saddens me

Seriously, what is wrong with being a size 12 or 14? Read an article in a heauty column the other day where the journalist claims that she flung a jumper down and stormed out of the shop in tears because it was a size 10 and didn't fit. Is the idea of trying on a size 12 really that horrendous? Does she not realize that sizes differ between shops anyway?

I'm a size 12, which according to a lot of people would put me in the overweight category. They dont seem to consider different body shapes at all.

There is nothing wrong with being bigger than a size 16 or 18 either but when they see size 12s and 14s being shamed they must feel awful about themselves at times as well.

They’re obviously all short, for my height I can wear a size 12 for most of the healthy bmi range - maybe size 10 at the very bottom end and size 14 towards BMI of 24/25.

Mrsjayy · 29/09/2019 10:02

I was reading a thread 5 minutes ago where a woman said she was an overweight size 10 Shock I stopped reading and clicked off the threa, size 12 is on the cusp of obesity for some women it is always women

icannotremember · 29/09/2019 10:04

As someone who has just gone down to a 14 from a 16/18, a 12 sounds great and when I can wear one I will be trumpeting it joyfully:)

joyceTempleSavage · 29/09/2019 10:07

I was very ill a few years ago and at absolute skin and bones I was still a size 11 due to my frame

I don’t give being a size 12 a thought other than to occasionally be irritated that it’s always the first size out of stock

Because there’s a fair few of us presumably

CountFosco · 29/09/2019 10:08

This is very true, I'm 5'2" and I only slip into a modern size 12 if I'm overweight but I know that size 12 is healthy for taller people. But worth bearing in mind that in the 80s and 90s I was a size 12 then at the same healthy weight I am now.

heyjoeyitsestelle · 29/09/2019 10:12

I'm currently a size 12/14 following having a baby and am 2 stone heavier than normal. I am very overweight. It's so different for everyone.
I am currently very unhappy with my body so shopping and having to buy a size 14 really gets me down.
(Finally joined the gym and working on losing the weight)

Phuquocdreams · 29/09/2019 10:14

Really depends on your size and shape. I go into the overweight category at 10st 11 (BMI) when I definitely would be in size 12. I’m also an apple so when I’m that size I’m not so healthy. But for a tall hourglass or pear, 12 would be fine.

Moltenpink · 29/09/2019 10:16

Agreed. At healthy bmi I’m a 12/14.

Themyscira · 29/09/2019 10:18

If we could all stop scrutinising our and other women's bodies, that would be a start.

Clothing sizes are the most irrational, undependable form of measurement, considering they not only vary from shop to shop but also within a shop.

It fucks with people's heads, and for what? Since when is a human being's worth ever been dependent on a consumerist label? I say never.

knottybeams · 29/09/2019 10:20

Currently carrying baby weight but I've been a size 8 (m&s) and still overweight by bmi. One is measurements the other is marketing.

madeyemoodysmum · 29/09/2019 10:26

I’m fairly slim but have massive boobs compared to my bottom . Always have so generally I have to get a 12:14 top I can’t do a lot about my boobs Barr surgery so it’s really annoying to hear this crap being spouted.

chocolatebuttonsandcheese · 29/09/2019 10:31

A size 12 for me is overweight, but I'm short and do not suit weight at all. Think it's different for everyone. If you're a size 16 then a size 12 sounds amazing. If you're an 8 then size 12 sounds awful

ToftheB · 29/09/2019 10:35

I'm a size 12, have been since I was about 18. I'm 5ft11 and quiet broad, so even when underweight according to BMI I've still got a size 12 frame. My sister is a similar height, but narrower in the shoulders and hips, so she's a 10.

People come in all shapes and sizes, and the numbers sewn into clothes are meaningless. I think we'd all be healthier and happier if we could stop worrying so much about it.

joystir59 · 29/09/2019 10:38

5'7", 9st 12lb, size 12, very slim, BMI 22.9. very happy to be a size 12!!!

tierraJ · 29/09/2019 10:41

I'm a 12/14 depending on the shop & on the item of clothing but I'm definitely 2 stone overweight.

For example I've got several size 12 tops & dresses from River Island but had to buy a size 14 top from Oasis.

In Tesco I fit easily into the high waist skinny ankle grazer size 14 jeans but can't do up a size 14 skirt in there; yet I've got a size 12 summer dress from Tesco that fits perfectly!!

Aged 23 or under 20 odd years ago when I was under 9 stone, and even when I was underweight, I always wore sizes 10 or 12.
Even at 8 stone I always had boobs.
I've got 2 size 12 dresses from Miss Selfridge from 20 years ago that I kept for sentimental reasons & would never fit them now!!
I think size 10 & 12 used to be much smaller.

Size 8 was difficult to get over 20 years ago! And size 6 didn't exist.

Drogosnextwife · 29/09/2019 10:44

I'm 5ft 10 and I'm a size 14. Generally even if I lose weight I will still be a size 14. I need it for my shape. Now I'm no skinny mini, but I'm in the middle of the healthy bmi range.

Teddybear45 · 29/09/2019 10:45

A size 12 on someone who is 5 ft 3 or often be huge and yes I have known obese size 12s who are in denial about their size because they can fit into a 12. In many cases this 12 is a vanity sized 12 too - for example Monsoon or Phase 8. A size 12 on someone who is 5 ft 6 or above is probably slim but again depends on the brand.

Kaykay06 · 29/09/2019 10:47

Depends where you shop too, I’m a 12 in some shops but 14 elsewhere
Would love to be a 12 boobs are big so never fit into 8/10 on top even when the rest of me was small, need to really lose the weight now but it’s sticking.

But the only person who makes me feel bad about being big is me, I’m quite hard on myself. And actually I don’t care what anyone else looks like.

ClownsandCowboys · 29/09/2019 10:48

Vanity sizing also means that a size 12 now is more like a 14 or even a 16 years ago. If you look at vintage clothes most of us wouldn't fit in the same size. (I say this as an overweight 14/16)

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 29/09/2019 10:49

I’m short, and hourglass shaped, with a broad back and hips. Even when I was at my lowest adult weight, I didn’t fit smaller than a 12, though I had a teeny waist back then. It’s only a dress size, not a measure of moral worth. I can’t see what the fuss is about.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 29/09/2019 10:50

Who gives a fuck really?

I have better things to do than get upset about some journalist who clearly either has body image issues or a ridiculously sheltered life if she thinks being a size 12 is some sort of horrendous event.

Normal people know that a size 12 is absolutely fine.

gostiwooz · 29/09/2019 10:54

It's all utter bollocks unless height and build is mentioned as well.

If you're only 4'11" then maybe you could be a size 10 and overweight. Because you're tiny. Likewise, on my 5'8" broad-shouldered frame a size 10 would be on the slightly underweight side.

I yearn for the days when I was a size 12/14.

QueenoftheNowhereverse · 29/09/2019 10:54

I would say they had standardised sizing like they do (mostly) for men. I mean 32” inches is 32” inches. I often buy trousers and jeans for my husband with no fear, but he couldn’t do the same for me.

Hoppinggreen · 29/09/2019 10:54

When I was younger a size 10 was slim, now I see celebs described as a “curvy size 10”. While I’m not saying you can’t have curves and be a 10 I had never heard of a 4 or 6 and 8 was seen as tiny.
I would see a size 12 as quite slim

QueenoftheNowhereverse · 29/09/2019 10:59
