Dr Martens - matt or parent finish?

wingobingos · 28/09/2019 20:10

Normally wear more pointy and less chunky boots, but I think I fancy a pair of DMs

I'm mid 40's - am I going to look ridiculous? My 2 eldest girls wear them in patent. Should I stick to Matt for a more grown-up look?

Will wear with skinnies (not giving them up just yet) and dresses with tights.

Thanks.

I really love patent leather!

Matte.
Look better imo. Patent has a 'cheap' look (sorry!) and is commonly imitated.

Headinthedrawer · 28/09/2019 20:15

I like the Matt ones and have recently bought my 1st pair since my teens...I'm late 40s.Still breaking them in.Taking the insole out has made them much more comfortable as I had to size down which made them tight across the foot .I love them.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/09/2019 20:32

I bought patent DM Flora Chelsea boots a few years ago, and they were impossible to break in. I sold them in the end. This year I bought some leather ones and the breaking in process has been much more bearable.

StrangersToLove · 28/09/2019 20:36

Patent ones are more uncomfortable IME. I have some black patent ones that I've never been able to wear in (they never soften like the leather ones).

Alabasterangel6 · 28/09/2019 20:39

I’ve got the flora Chelsea and just blown the dust off them for the 3rd autumn. They look like they did the first year and are so comfy - I just tend to wear a fractionally thicker sock (the type with a looped/towelling back) rather than a thin ‘fashion’ sock for the first few wears.

Everyone comments on them. And they’re not obviously docs either I can pull my skinny jeans over the tops too if I fancy. No laces to deal with. Love them!

I'm mid 40s and I'd buy Matte if I was buying some. I follow someone on insta who is early 40s and on her they look amazing

rededucator · 28/09/2019 20:59

Is this the 8 eye ones? I'm looking at them just now. About £139?

Ellapaella · 29/09/2019 13:12

I have matte but love the look of patent ones. I do think they'd be harder to break in and likely rip my feet to shreds though.

slavetothemoney · 29/09/2019 18:58

I was toying between patent & matte.
Went with some cherry red1460 matte ones from Shuperb, only £105 and comfortable from first wear!

Span1elsRock · 29/09/2019 19:01

I've got patent flora boots (2 pairs) and adore them. You just literally wipe a cloth over them to keep clean, I've got black and a reddish brown. Wear them with jeans, leggings and work trousers.

I long for weather that means I can wear them Grin

Manicpixiedreambitch · 29/09/2019 19:08

I own many pairs of DMs. Matte is a good all rounder.

mumtomaxwell · 30/09/2019 00:31

I’m 42 and I’ve got beautiful patent ones with pink ribbon laces! They’re taking a while to walk in but I love them. They’re obviously genuine - I live near the DM factory in Northamptonshire.

WeCameToDance · 30/09/2019 09:19

I have white patent ones. I love them but they have taken 6 long years to break in. I thought I had cracked it a few times but as soon as I wore them when pregnant they started hurting again. I think my feet must change shape in pregnancy.
I would say they are broken in now and I wear them everyday but I still feel like they could be a bit more comfortable. I don't think patent ever fully softens.

gingersausage · 30/09/2019 09:21

I don’t know if it happens with all colours, but with my pink patent ones the colour has cracked horribly and flaked off. They are old but definitely genuine. I wouldn’t buy patent again for this reason.

Racheyg · 30/09/2019 18:15

Matt. My patent ones took forever to wear in and even now they occasionally rub

thistimelastweek · 30/09/2019 18:20

I have both and the matte are much more comfortable. Like gloves for the feet.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 30/09/2019 18:20

Another person who never got their patent ones to break in- mine were just plain black.

I thought I just had weirdly shaped heels until I came across another MN thread where looooads of other people had the same problem.

So frustrating as they look fabulous Sad

Ohms11 · 30/09/2019 19:29

Mine are two-tone "arcadia" leather, which seems to be in the middle between matte and patent. They are proving v. hard to break in, but are just gorgeous: www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/p/originals-boots-arcadia-1460#

Divebar · 30/09/2019 21:51

Matte. I wore my shoes today for the first time this Autumn. Wore with a very long black pencil skirt and a black top from Cos
