Products for people with nickel allergy?

My dermatologist has advised me to avoid anything containing iron oxides (Cl 77491, 92 and 99). They’re in practically all my cosmetics!! Has anyone found an iron oxide-free bronzer, in particular?

She didn’t actually say anything about shampoo in relation to nickel but I also reacted to PPD, which I understand often goes along with nickel allergy, and balsam of Peru, which is a common irritant, apparently.

Any advice much appreciated!

Not much help- my mum had this but don't remember it affecting her scalp. Though she had ezcema of the scalp anyway. She did not wear make up but had trouble with watchstraps and backs. Could only wear 18K gold.

I guess the only thing is to contact cosmetic houses/google the products. I guess most 'natural' shampoos would be ok? Again you'd need to check labels etc

I have a nickel allergy but have never thought about the content of beauty products before... I wonder if that's why I have 'sensitive', irritable skin?!

This blog seems worth a look: ironoxidefreemakeup.wordpress.com/products/

Thanks Deathray and remember!

I’ve been googling but there’s a lot of conflicting advice. I did find that site, remember, but I don’t think she’s updated it very often.

I found a good site called skinsafe.org, but although it lets you filter to products that don’t contain iron oxides, for example, it doesn’t let you filter that selection...so you’re left with 17,000 products 😂 confusingly it does have a nickel-allergy-safe label for some products, but some of these seem to contain iron oxides.

Then my googling led me down an internet black hole that said there’s nickel in practically everything I eat!! 😱

I have the same @Laquila, and I gave up finding products which didn’t contain iron oxide. I went to basically every make up counter and spent hours online, with no luck. I’ve ended up just wearing less make up, and less often. Will wear it when I’m going out and it doesn’t seem to irritate my skin too much.

Oh wow, I've always been horribly allergic to nickel and started with a reaction to eye make up last year.

I'd never connected the two but I wonder if the under eye concealer I was using contained the elements you're talking about.

carlywurly · 29/09/2019 21:31

Just googled it and it did.. those are the last 3 ingredients in Clinique air brush concealer.

Arse. It took me months to get rid of the reaction but at least I know what's doing it now.

Carly it seems (from my googling) that those pigments are in practically every kind of make-up that contains “skin” colour - e.g, bronzer, foundation etc.

As I understand it though, nickel isn’t always in iron oxides. To add to the uncertainty, some cosmetics actually only state that they “may contain” iron oxides. Not sure how helpful that is, sorry!
