Anti-fungal meds?

This is neither stylish nor beautiful but this seemed the best place to ask...

Most of my toe nails have fungal nail infections. Now 2 of my finger nails do. As you can imagine, I've tried everything (I even boil wash my socks) and it has done absolutely nothing.

I'm thinking of asking my GP for anti-fungal meds but I know they are pretty nasty things. Has anyone taken them, how were they, and did they work?

DH took these - he needed to have liver function tests throughout &it took a while to resolve but cleared it up.

I went to a foot clinic in my local town. They took one look at it and said it is a fungal infection. She said I can do a test here and now to prove it, it will cost £50. I will print you a letter which you take to your doctor's receptionist, don't even need to make an appointment. The doctor will make out a prescription for meds, which you then pick up and fill. Which I did. Took a tablet a day for about 2 months and it cleared up completely . Best £100 (including fee for podiatry appt) I have ever spent. Zero side effects. Having spent years painting over my diseased toenails and hiding my feet I now have amazing toenails. Do it.

Tea tree oil has solved it for me.

Have had to have medication from the docs in the past when it got bad but now when I see emerging signs I liberally apply the tea tree and it disappears.

Tea tree user also. Cut the nail as short as you can bear it, file it a bit on the top and then drop a few drops of tea tree on it. Every day, after a shower, with the drops.

Had it for years on my toes, tried every off the shelf solution going. Nothing was working and some made it worse, or at least more painful.

Finally went to the doctors who gave me "Tebanofen" I've never tasted anything quite like it! But it worked and within 6 months I was fungal free!

Good luck!

Can you get the tablets without a prescription ?

ElizaPancakes · 27/09/2019 23:35

I did. Terbinafine - spelling might not be right!

At the time I started taking them I’d had gross nails for easily 20 years, two rounds and it had completely cleared up. It’s come back on my baby toes so I need to restart.

I had a liver test; all was fine.

I wasted years and lots of money trying tea tree oil, vinegar and other topical remedies. I even tried PACT nail treatment which was a waste of £600.

I finally went to my GP and asked for Terbinafine. I think I took it for 9 months and had blood tests every 6 weeks to check liver function. I was fine on the tablets but I think they gave me a mild upset stomach. But they did work.

On finishing the tablets I chucked out all my shoes and socks and bought new ones. I didn't want to risk getting it again.

It's so nice to have normal toenails and not feel embarrassed. I didn't wear sandals for years, but could this summer.

As others have said - Terbinafine. I took it for 8 months to clear up a fungal infection on my toes, after spending years wishing it would go away and trying everything else. No side effects at all for me; they did check liver function beforehand. Took a few weeks to see progress and after an initial 6-month prescription they extended it to 8. By then it was all gone. You definitely can't get the tablets without a prescription. Don't mess around with anything else, though - I think Terbinafine works by causing holes to develop in the membrane of the fungal cells, so their contents leak out and they die. Nothing else is going to do that! Good luck.

Yes I had terbinafine after trying tea tree and paint in lotions for 2 years. It worked within 3 months and no side effects. I too tree away all my shoes which I had worn whilst I had the infection.

Iamblossom · 29/09/2019 17:57

Yep think mine was terbinafine too
