Dr Martens issue

I have a pair of DMs, only a year or two old (I stupidly threw my old comfy ones away years ago when I stopped wearing them!) and they have been worn maybe five times and stored in the bottom of my wardrobe. Went to put them on yesterday and the leather on one side at the top has gone rock hard, also the tongue, can't even bend it a little. Has this happened to anyone else and can it be softened again?
