Can anyone recommend me a red lipstick?

I would like to buy a decent red lipstick for a friend - she is very pale with dark brown almost black hair. I'm thinking it should probably be a cool toned red which is the opposite of me (I'm an autumn, guessing she's a winter). Can anyone recommend me a nice one? No real budget, it's a gift so happy to buy high end. Many thanks in advance.

I have similar colouring to your friend and I like Mac 'Russian Red'. I've had lots of compliments when wearing it.

Red lipstick is my specialist subject! Russian Red, or MAC Red would be great, but if you want something fancier, Guerlain Rouge G in Garconne would be lovely - it comes in a beautiful case. Charlotte Tilbury’s So Marilyn is quite similar to MAC Russian Red, and another good option might be Burberry Military Red, which comes in different finishes. If she likes a true matte finish, Laura Mercier Dominate is a favourite of mine, but some people find those a bit dry.

I'd recommend Mac's Ruby Woo - I'm very pale with dark hair and it really suits my skintone.

As you are an expert.. what might suit me? Warm skin tones, medium toned, golden with brown/blonde hair with red undertones? I've yet to find my perfect red, I need one that doesn't make my teeth look yellow

What colour eyes does she have? I’m pale, with dark hair and blue eyes, and I love Chantecaille Lip Chic in Nocturne, which is a cool-toned, slightly pinky red. Really brings out the blue in my eyes, and makes my teeth look whiter. It has a glossy, moisturising finish.

I’m darker skinned, more olive-y, so orange reds are my preference - but I own about 100 red lipsticks!

For you, I would have a look at Smashbox Bing, which is quite a neutral red. It’s my go-to if I can’t be bothered thinking about it. You can swatch it in Boots.

I just looked at Guerlain and the Rouge Gs seem to go by numbers rather than names now. I think Garconne is 25.

Nars Trans-Siberia is lovely.

I rarely wear a red lipstick nowadays at full volume but I love Chanel Pirate and will mute it by blotting it a few times. It’s such a beautiful colour.

I have MAC Russian red and MAC Chilli red. I like both but the chilli red is my favourite of the two because it’s more of an orange red than a bright red. Maybe that’s just me though as I have pale skin and red hair so finding the right red lipstick that works with my hair has taken years.

Also, going by the reviews I have read, the MAC chilli shade is also popular with people who have an Asian skin tone. Not sure if that helps you out any.

Another fan of Chanel Pirate here! It’s a vibrant but cool-toned red. Really brings out blue eyes. Very easy to wear & remainder of makeup can be kept simple as it really boosts natural colouring. I’m naturally dark brunette but have blonde highlights.

For those who love Mac, what’s the staying power like? I’ve recently got into red lipsticks and so far the only one I’ve found that lasts is the Maybelline Lip Ink. I love the look of the Mac lipsticks though, particularly Ruby Woo, so I’ve got my fingers crossed!

I'm also pale, dark hair and blue eyes and like others I love Mac Russian red and also ruby woo. To pp I find the staying power really good. I use the Mac primer and it stays on all day through coffees and lunch. Quick top up after lunch and I'm good for the day. If on a night out I would apply once and be good to go! Go for the Mac op, your friend will love it!

If budget is no issue get the Tom Ford one. It lasts for ever and lovely to put on. I can't remember the exact shade. Otherwise I'm a big fan of No7.

I am cool toned and pale, I do have Chanel pirate but it is full on, I call it my Christmas lipstick.
