Midi dress what coat?

I have bought a couple of midi dresses for work this winter but I am struggling for a warm fairly smart coat that works with a longer length skirt. I guess I need something short but I am struggling for inspiration, any suggestions? Budget flexible but thinking around £100.

Mid-thigh to above knee length for me. Single breasted, wool. Preferably in a dark green (forest, or bottle).

Saw a beautiful one at Jigsaw in their sale for £100. If you can get to an outlet store of theirs they may have it in stock as I saw it again this week (it’s no longer on their website).

I prefer very long coats with midi dresses.

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 19:46

I want a tweed or herringbone blazer, but stumped for, when it’s really stormy and I need a hood.

This is bothering me beyond description..it would be funny if it wasn’t tragic 😁

Ninkaninus · 23/09/2019 20:06

Oh yes very long would look fab too! And very long coats are going to be the thing this A/W, I believe.

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 20:14

Yes but find one that doesn’t feel like sponge and doesn’t contain 80% polyester.

I’m fed up.

BenWillbondsPants · 23/09/2019 20:30

My mum used to always say that your skirt should never be longer than your coat. She would impart this information like committing such an faux pas was a hanging offence.

Unfortunately, this has stayed with me and no matter if I try to be a rebel, I can imagine her tutting at me and always revert to a longer coat. Grin

Ninkaninus · 23/09/2019 20:38

I know what you mean...but really, you wouldn’t be rebelling at all. Most of those fashion conventions are wildly outdated now (same with no black and navy/no green and blue).

XingMing · 23/09/2019 21:01

I'd have to agree with the pp's mum who reckoned coats should cover the full length of your skirt, and with Nink that mid-thigh is the best alternative. Or a jacket and high boots. Knee length skirt and mid thigh jacket is fine, or midi and long coat or jacket, or both.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 23/09/2019 22:02

Thanks, am looking at long coats now. I am not very tall so never sure about long coats but need to try some on I think.

Oh I know, but I just can't bring myself to do it! 😂

MairzyDoats · 23/09/2019 23:05

The problem with midi skirts and dresses is that if you wear a mid thigh to knee length cost you end up with a funny silhouette of bunched fabric below the coat hemline, which looks a bit ridiculous. So for me it has to be either a long coat or waist length jacket. If anyone has any links to gorgeous long coats (I've got a hankering for a grey military style one) please go right ahead...

Ninkaninus · 23/09/2019 23:25

I’d probably leave the coat open to try to avoid that. I guess it also depends on the dress fabric too.

Hmmmm I know I’ve seen some lovely long coats but I can’t remember where...

Joe2019 · 23/09/2019 23:29

Mine are Jaeger, but m n s do a long fitting on some of theirs.

Lucked · 24/09/2019 00:36

I am struggling with this too none of my winter coats work including mid thigh to knee length. In summer I had my biker or denim jacket for casual wear which worked well and I did wear blazers for work but they weren’t perfect.

I really like this in the berry colour. Not very exciting but nice.

Really short leather or faux leather jacket

Faith50 · 24/09/2019 10:17

Ankle length coat or short jacket. In between is unflattering though a lot of women do it.
