So down about my hairloss...

Hi All,

I’ve been experiencing hair loss for the last five months and I am so very down about it all. I already have an underactive thyroid that is treated with medication. My ferritin levels are also very good. I’ve had blood tests but they have only shown very low levels of B12 and folate. Has anyone had anything similar? It started shedding suddenly one day in April and just hasn’t stopped. Anyone? I am beside myself with worrying.

Thank you

Sarah.

Apologies for crashing the thread op but I wonder if I can put a question to @hairclinicaltricho?

I'm just completing chemo for breast cancer, and have used the cold cap but still have lost probably two thirds of my hair which was previously very strong and thick.
Is there anything you would recommend to encourage hair growth post-chemo, either supplements, shampoos or head massage? I have done some reading but the advice is confusing and I don't want to do the wrong thing. Thanks in anticipation for any advice you might be able to give.

Op....I hope your situation resolves....losing your hair is so distressing.

I would definitely see a specialist about yours, @WTF99... after chemo your body will have been through so much!!!

@thefirstmrsdewinter I wonder if I’m on too much Levothyroxine. My TSH is very suppressed at

Yes, that sounds like too much. Some people have a suppressed tsh (I take t3 so even when everything else is well within range my tsh is sometimes slightly under or close to the bottom of the lab range) but your t4 shouldn't be high.

How long have you been on levo? Do you have any lingering hypo symptoms? Is your levo prescribed by your gp or do you see an endo?

Just know that no matter what changes you make, if they are working, you hair will take a long time to actually show results. There is absolutely no point trying something for a couple of months and then deciding I’d isnt working. You have to try it for about 4-6 months before you will see results or not. Trying lots of things at once isn’t a good idea either, then you don’t know what’s working.

Do you use any oil on your hair? A few ladies I know lost their hair because they were slathering oil on their scalps.

I have hair loss, and taken Biotin, omega 3, you mention it i have taken it, even viviscal
Seen a dermatologist who says it is chronic [long lasting] effluvium, more then 6 months] he said he thought it was caused by stress, and it would grow back, still waiting, this has been almost 2 years now, and very depressing,so i can empathise OP,
My ferritin levels are pretty high,as i have Haemochromatosis ,[too much iron]
I am still taking Biotin but high strength 10000 mgs,
Mine isn't so much overall hair loss, yes it has thinned a bit, but a big patch at the back from the crown down, which is very noticeable and i generally need to wear a hat
