I got a 50s style cocktail dress in green to go to a wedding. I've just found out that the wedding party are going to be in a green similar to it. I'm close enough that wearing it could look like a passive aggressive dig at not bring included (it really isn't!) And I need help! Don't think i can really afford yo buy something else - this was a steal.

It's vaguely similar to this, although the colour is different and it has lacing on the back.

It's beautiful! Just wear it how you intended - don't worry about it.

MitMopse · 20/09/2019 19:55

Could you add an overlay in a lace or similar to the skirt? Obviously you can make sure your jacket/accessories are different to the wedding party but other than dye it (could go v wrong) I'm struggling to think what can be done about colour?

Gorgeous dress btw!

DottieLottie1 · 20/09/2019 19:56

@Binglebong that's unfortunate but I think your only option is to choose again. Cant you take the dress back or have you had it a while?

Saying this I wouldn't necessarily know what the colour theme at a wedding is, so this scenario is always possible. Your Green would t have been an obvious avoidance either 😬

ZenNudist · 20/09/2019 20:00

Just wear it. You will tone in nicely with the pictures! It won't be the same as the BMs. Plus you will be wearing a jacket or shawl with it so will look different.

How were you planning to weat it? Black accessories would stand out, not be very bridesmaidy and easy to do.

SpangledBoots · 20/09/2019 20:02

To make it look less bridesmaid-y, you'll need to incorporate another colour. Do you have any jazzy shoes?! Big colourful necklace or earrings.

During the ceremony a jacket etc. is fine to distinguish you from the wedding party but you'll take that off for the reception.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 20/09/2019 20:06

Something similar happened to me at a friend's wedding - the bride had requested 'floor length gowns' (I know) and the only one I had was a former bridesmaid dress which turned out to be the same colour as the bridesmaids. We had a laugh about it, I was careful where I stood in the group pics, nothing was ever said about it.

I would go contrasting for accessories. Oh, and don't carry a posy of flowers because that wont helpGrin

HypatiaCade · 20/09/2019 20:26

I doubt that their green dresses will be cocktail dresses. Throw a wrap or bolero over the top for photos if need be and you will be fine.

You will look stunning, especially on the dance floor!!!

Binglebong · 20/09/2019 20:49

No post, got it! Grin

If I wasn't close (it's family), it wouldn't matter. But I've seen another posts on here to know to be careful!

Are black accessories ok? Again, I've seen on here posts saying they are terrible things to wear. I've got a light black shawl with embroidery and fringing on the end I could use if it's ok.

I may try to have a word with the bride. And if I think she would prefer me not to wear it (I'm not talented enough to add lace!), I'll try to get something else. Avoiding funeral and wedding dresses! Gotta loved AIBU threads....

Really do appreciate the help. I like hats so that could he another way to make it clear in not crashing the wedding party.

Thank you!

I think asking the bride is the way to go.Surprising how much some brides can care about this sort of thing. It's a gorgeous dress.Black shawl/bolero as others have said would look great

Binglebong · 21/09/2019 12:37

I very much doubt she'll be a bridezilla. The difficulty will be getting her to eat if she does mind - she won't want to hurt my feelings!

*day. Not sure where eat came from!
