Birthday present dress for around £65

Don't usually post here but need some help.

It's my birthday soon and my mother wishes to buy me a dress, which is very nice of her.

However, she sent a link to the dress she wants to buy - which is from one of her favourite websites - and it is a bit, well, frumpy, to be perfectly honest. Which is not surprising since it is her favourite site and she is in her eighties.

We have agreed that I can find something else for the money she would have spent, but she would like me to buy a dress.

I am very happy to buy a dress - I wear them all the time for work - but can't seem to find anything I like in that price range.

I am on a diet and coming down from 18. I am, for example 16 in Fatface, which was my first port of call but they didn't seem to have anything I liked. I am in my early fifties. I have spent a long time trying to describe my style so it doesn't sound like a desperate art teacher, which I am not. But I am an academic so like scarfs, attention-grabbing jewellery, etc. Not corporate.

I wear dresses to work under a jacket. I have to have a vee neckline because of my large bosoms. I like something midi rather than short. I tend to wear boots with the dresses.

Can anyone suggest some nice sites that I could search?

Thanks! Hmm. Like the Jolie leopard print best, but not sure if it is not a bit too short.
DH tends to imply that I have a Bet Lynch gene when I look at leopard print stuff, but in blue it looks nice.
Do you know whether Jolie comes up big or small for size?

If you like fat face, the next why not try Boden, white stuff, joules, seasalt, apricot?

Floopily · 20/09/2019 13:33

Oliver Bonas?

Libra · 20/09/2019 13:36

Not sure about whitestuff seasalt and boden - seem a bit holiday-ish for my wants at the moment.
Never heard of Apricot. Will investigate.

Half my lecture theatre seem to be clad in Oliver Bonas so I tend to avoid it.

Is Joe Browns too out there for you?

Roman originals have some nice work style shirt type midi dresses and there is a discount code. I have had some dresses from here for work and I've had lots of compliments

Oooh. I like the roman originals stuff - another brand I have never heard of. Particularly the first dress.

Yes, like Joe Browns.

This one from monsoon is nice, but it's button fronted which might not be ideal if you are large up top?

ghostofharrenhal · 20/09/2019 16:00

Oh, sorry, you said midi rather than short, so may not work for you.

Libra · 20/09/2019 16:00

It is nice, but you are right - buttons are problematic (hence the scarfs).

I bought this one recently (it’s in the sale now annoyingly)
Think it’s a good autumn/spring dress. I liked the length and sleeves as well as v neck.

TooMinty · 20/09/2019 16:37

Hmm, that was meant to be 4 dresses, not sure what happened 🤔

That Monsoon one is nice, I wish I was tall enough to wear it!

Sosander has nice dresses and free delivery and returns too 👍
