Shrinking clothes, why is this??

Clothes are shitty these days (M&S I am looking specially at you!), so I pretty much take it for granted that things will shrink after the first wash. With this in mind, I have at times cleverly bought a size bigger to allow for shrinkage.

Except this has backfired because tops shrink in length but not in width so I end up with short boxy tops (my worst shape), and trousers shrink in both length and width so I end up with trousers that are too tight on the thigh and much too short, to never be worn again.

WHY???

What temperature do you wash on? Do you tumble dry? Clothes shouldn't shrink. I get my clothes from all kinds of places, wash on 30 and line-dry, and they're always all fine.

Are you tumble drying and or washing too hot? Are they dry clean only?

My clothes don't shrink!

Viscose generally shrinks (maybe cheaper cotton on a normal wash) even on a hand wash but apart from that generally my clothes are okay.

I don’t buy Tshirts from M&S anymore for this reason - always shrink in length but not width. It’s not washing temp or tumbling - I wash at 30 and never tumble and no other brands do it.
