Sugar waxing

I'm not a very girly girl but I thought I'd treat myself and have my legs waxed for the first time today.
I'm not sure if it's normal or if I've been ripped off as I've never had it done before but I was there for nearly an hour and have had to come home and shave my legs!
I was imagining coming home with lovely smooth legs but I've just come home with very sore legs that are still hairy, obviously they where less hairy but not silky smooth, I'd say about 70% of the hair was gone but there was still hair all over my legs and a few patches that didn't look like they'd been done at all. Is this normal for first time sugar waxing, did I have unrealistic expectations?

I have had a few salon waxes (hot wax and strip wax) on my legs, underarms and intimates and all have been awful.

Never completely smooth, one woman gave me a lovely skin infection in my armpit by repeatedly running over the same section; ripping and burning my skin which then got infected...

I epilate now, it leaves my legs and arms and underarms baby soft.
Unfortunately it gives me ingrowns down below and sometimes breaks the hair there.

I think epilating only really works well for fine hair personally.

Sugar wax I have tried too myself (the 'real' stuff you make yourself), it works alright but no better than regular wax and I kept eating it instead of putting it on my skin...
