Are these loafers too smart?

Here are the loafers...after years of being fairly casual and running around after toddlers I fancied having a change and smartening up a bit.

Are they too smart for mostly casual wear? And should they just be worn with trousers, or can they be worn with tights and short skirts? The latter was pretty flattering on the legs but I’m worried it looked a bit late 80’s early 90’s (which was probably the last time that I owned loafers).

They look fine to me. I wouldn't class them as "too smart" but then I don't wear joggers etc at home (and definitely not outside the house) so my idea of casual may not be same as others.

I wear ones like that to work but rarely wear them casually. I do have brogues I wear casually with jeans. For skirts and dresses I have been wearing white trainers but I will be moving to ankle boots with the colder weathers.

FuckOffBoris · 14/09/2019 22:21

I wouldn't wear those casually.

They look very much like a classic Gucci loafer, they were very popular in the late 1980's. Looking at new shoes for this winter it looks like that style is coming around again. If you like them, they are comfortable & look good, I would buy them.

MrsApplepants · 14/09/2019 23:43

I like them and would buy them. I think they are quite versatile

I think the bar for what you can wear around and about 'casually' is pretty high.
My concern with those shoes would be that they're patent and I've found patent shoes cut my feet up quite a bit.

Moonba · 15/09/2019 08:13

Despite being patent they are oddly comfortable as they have quite a soft leather lining.

I like the idea of brogues but my feet are big so I prefer a lower front, I have ankle boots too. I must admit leggings were as relaxed as I became and I haven’t worn a pair since I was pregnant 5 years ago...so perhaps my casual is a little smarter than I thought.

I think I’d be happy with them for trousers, I’m just not sure about skirts. I did love them in the late 80’s!

I think loafers are quite frumpy and I would only wear them with trousers. Very flat shoes and short skirts are rarely attractive unless you are supermodel slim.

AliciaQuays · 15/09/2019 08:19

They’re quite thin. I think you can’t wear with jeans unless you’re also petite or they’d look wrong. With jeans you need clumpy

Moonba · 15/09/2019 08:24

I don’t know, I’m about a size 8 at the moment...not supermodel like though as I’m not tall! I feel like I need to be careful with clumpy as I’m a size 7 or 8 in shoes and Can feel like Olive Oil from Popeye.

I’d rather know what looks ok now though before spending and regretting.
