Classic white shirt

I'm thinking about autumn/winter work outfits and I like the idea of getting a nice crisp white shirt and a chambray shirt that I can layer under jumpers or cardi's - I like the idea of trying to pull off a slightly preppy look this autumn. I've not bought a shirt in years - can anyone recommend one that's good quality, nice soft fabric that doesn't shrink in the wash and irons easily? Preferably under £50 each?

I was looking at the Boden Modern Classic shirts online but have been underwhelmed by the quality and durability of their bretons and ravello tops so a bit unsure

I tend to wear white shirts quite a bit. On a 40° wash, shaken out and then hung to dry, they all shrink a little bit over time. I think my ones from TMLewin were most reliable but haven't bought from here recently as they were very 'shirty' and I wanted a more relaxed and stylish look.

Thanks MsSweeney - DH has some TM Lewin shirts that have lasted well, but as you say, they are definitely business shirts. Something I can wear at the weekends as well would be great

Have you tried Reiss, Jaeger or Hobbs?

Zinnia · 15/09/2019 11:52

It's the kind of thing I've bought from Gap in the past, but not recently so can't vouch for current stock. My last couple of shirts like this have been Uniqlo and a big success. Cos always have a very good selection of white shirts too.

Chambray is more difficult in my experience, as colour/weight of fabric can vary so much. I have a good one from Selected Femme that's a few years old now, but always have an eye out for the "perfect" chambray!

Ignore the styling in the first few photos, this shirt is so fab I bought 2 in case I mark the first.. 😬

Plus it’s cheap!

I bought a v nice white shirt from M&S on Thursday. Haven't worn it yet so can't vouch for its longevity.

And you don't need to wash shirts at 40deg unless you do manual labour or something

hotcrossbun4321 · 15/09/2019 15:25

@HappyGirlNow I'd forgotten about Zara - that looks fab thanks, just the sort of thing I was looking for!

Love the preppy look and their is so much on offer this autumn.

I find that the shirts I wear in their own don’t work well for layering unless it is a very loose jumper. For layering I need a very fitted shirt I have the Hawkes and Curtis fitted and fitted stretch which work although you may need to size up in those.

HappyGirlNow · 15/09/2019 16:26

Ah yes you’re right lucked I missed the layering part.

OP for under jumpers this would probably be better:

I think OP was loking at shirts costing under £50; some here are well over budget.

I don't have a desk job, no.

Do others find that they can wash white shirts at 30 and they remain crisp and pristine?

Theredjellybean · 16/09/2019 13:10

I have lovely chambrey shirt from uniglo.
Washes well, good weight, button down Oxford colour. Love it....
White shirts, I think Curtis and hawkes fitted stretch is best for layering and slightly more tailored look.
I also have tm lewin semi fitted shirts.. Both above brilliant for work, or with jeans.
My look is very preppy /classic.
It suits me so stick with it.
Usually wear cashmere jumper or cardigan over shirts.

Pink are beautiful shirts but very expensive.

I got a great one from Cos last year, lovely fabric, washes well. I think it was about €45, and they'll doubtless have something similar this season.
