Is there a gym kit thread...?

frozenonions · 12/09/2019 06:10

If not, I thought I'd start one Smile

I have some Sweaty Betty leggings which look beautiful but if I'm brutally honest, the material is too thick. I'm currently lusting after their running jacket https://www.sweatybetty.com/shop/tops/coats-and-jackets/fast-track-running-jacket-SB1962Black.html?dwvarr_SB1962Blackk_color=black&cgid=&tile=2#q=Jacket&lang=default&start=2

I need a new sports bra. I like the look of the straps on this one from H&M (see attached pic) but I may need more support than 'medium'.

I have an amazing H&M gym vest which I absolutely LOVE. Such good value. I might get a grey one but I sweat profusely so not sure that's a good idea Hmm

Has anyone got any trainer recommendations, particularly for wide feet?

My yoga leggings all come from Decathlon - they’re a good price and aren’t see-through even when I fold right over.

Running-wise I have an old pair of Ronhill tights which are great, though I’m not sure if they do them any more, they were bought out I think? I used to find good stuff in TKMaxx as well.

Bloomburger · 13/09/2019 08:15

Not sure if any of you are fitness professionals but you get

30% off at sweaty Betty (on top of sale prices too)
10% off of Lululemon (only in store)
25% off Reebok (only full price items)

And 20% off at Ripple Yoga wear who do the most amazing jumpsuits.

Luaa · 13/09/2019 08:33

I love my tikiboo leggings, whi are mostly in the 'childish' prints 😁

They are high waisted, never fall down, have a drawstring and have a picket on the back.

LaPampa · 13/09/2019 08:57

I have an ancient pair of Sweaty Betty leggings which I bought when I lived in London and before kids so must be more than 8 years old. I wear them to run in and to yoga once / twice a week. They are a little bit bobbly now but still fine. So the cost per wear has been brilliant !

AnnaNimmity · 13/09/2019 09:55

you can normally get discounts on SB and Lululemon - I never pay full price.

Also, (and I'm shallow) - I'm less interested in technical amazingness - I want my gear to last a long time, I want it to be comfortable, but I also want it to look flattering. And SB leggings are!

(I do need technical amazingness for my trainers - hence I'm ok wearing Brooks).

frozenonions · 13/09/2019 14:02

Students also get 20% off at Sweaty Betty Smile

I really envy those of you who can wear nice colourful exercise gear. I don't mind my armpit / back / underboob sweat showing but my crotch just seems to love a good old sweat (talking large patch here) and no one else in the gym deserves to be subjected to that sight.

Can I pop in to ask about trainers for those of you mentioning wide feet. I too have wide feet - EEE wide. Any experience of finding trainers to fit that sort of width

HundredMilesAnHour · 13/09/2019 18:19

What is it that makes Karrimor socks so fab

They're well made (not too thick but not too thin) but most importantly, they wash well! I think that's where so many sports socks go wrong. They're great when new but after a few washes, they lose their shape, or they wrinkle, or they shrink etc.

I wear these ones (and my gym owner wears the male version) although you can often pick them up for around £5.50 a pair (which is about half price). I track them down on Amazon or SportsDirect.

frozenonions · 13/09/2019 18:50

Oh they're snazzy socks!

@gassylady I am wide of foot and just awaiting delivery of the Asics I mentioned upthread, will report back once they arrive and I've tested them out Smile My SIL is a podiatrist and recommends Asics or Brooks for us wide footers.

TamarindCove · 13/09/2019 19:16

@gassylady Brooks do aN EE fit in some of their trainers. It might be worth trying some on as I sometimes need wide fit but in Brooks their standard width fitting is fine for me.

They do the Adrenaline 19's in an EE and IMO this style has quite a generous toe box so you may find the EE will work for you.

CSharpLemon · 13/09/2019 19:30

Hoka do wide fitting shoes! Beautiful shoes.
These leggings are meant to be just like lululemon:

Pinkvici22 · 13/09/2019 20:41

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned Gymshark! I love their high waisted leggings and hoodies. Bras not great - i have one which is quite supportive and one which is hopeless!

Summersunshine2 · 13/09/2019 20:48

Ooo reading with interest seeing as I have just joined a gym and Christmas is coming up 💪

ScrambledSmegs · 13/09/2019 22:55

Hoka One One are great for wide feet, and they’ve got loads of space in the toe box which was just dreamy after the nightmare of my favourite ASICS (Nimbus) getting narrower and narrower with each iteration. Glad to hear that they’re now recommended for people with wide feet, but now I’ve found Hokas I’m never going back!

I do like Sweaty Betty but only buy in the sale. You can also get some lovely stuff second hand, I’ve had some great bargains. I can’t get on with all the prints on stuff like Tikiboo and Lucy Locket Loves, I’m all about plain fabrics and more subtle prints.

Bloomburger · 14/09/2019 11:43

Under Armour shoes are v wide. I bought a couple of pairs in the same and they were like bloody flippers. Lovely looking navy trainers so I was a bit 😡

Gwenhwyfar · 14/09/2019 12:09

I find tops very easy to find, but leggings are problematic. They're all too hot and sweaty. Someone recommended Gap on here and I bought one in the sales, but it's still too heavy and tight. I think what I really need is the equivalent of a string vest for my legs i.e. I want to cover them up, but don't want any real coverage if you know what I mean.
I need something I can buy in a real shop, not online.

frozenonions · 14/09/2019 12:15

@Gwenhwyfar Have you tried mesh leggings? There are a few styles from various brands that look a lot 'lighter' than most leggings. I have the same problem - my Sweaty Betty power leggings make me feel really claustrophobic Hmm

Not sure if any of you are fitness professionals but you get

How do you get this?

Deathraystare · 14/09/2019 15:14

Sure sign I know F.A. about gym/running gear. I looked online at the Brooks trainers and cannot see they are much different from anything else around. Would not say they are any uglier than anything else?!

Ooogetyooo · 14/09/2019 23:24

Thumbs up for Gymshark from me , lovely luxurious fabric with great stretch yet firm . High waisted leggings and great colours. I like the crop tops too but would like to see more v necklines instead of high necks .

frozenonions · 15/09/2019 07:31

The H&M sports bra I put in my OP arrived yesterday. I love it. For medium support it seems to contain my norks very well. But it comes up quite small - I'm a size 12 and ordered the medium, but I probably could have gone up to a large.

OP posts:
SleepyKat · 15/09/2019 08:44

I don’t think Brooks are any uglier than any other running/serious exercise trainer. Though I have a particularly ugly pair of grey ones as they fitted my feet best. But in comparison to more “fashion” trainers they’re ugly.

Dd wouldnt go to the running shop for gym trainers. She ordered some all white, fashionable looking things online and trots round the gym taking instaselfies in them! Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 15/09/2019 09:08

"@Gwenhwyfar Have you tried mesh leggings?"

Not seen any. My H&M ones have mesh panels, but almost the whole thing being mesh sounds good.

hotcrossbun4321 · 15/09/2019 11:03

Anyone here who goes to the gym before/after work and has a commute on public transport? What bag do you use for kit? I'm currently carrying a Le Pliage for gym stuff in addition to my handbag but end up feeling weighed down. Can anyone recommend a smart rucksack?

I'm considering [[https://www.marksandspencer.com/laptop-backpack/p/p60214656?image=SD_01_T01_6444Z_NT_X_EC_90&color=TEAL&prevPage=plp this]

Gwenhwyfar · 15/09/2019 12:10

hotcross - I don't think there's a solution. I'm using a bag from M&S. It's not heavy, but the weight of the things inside makes it heavy. I regularly get shoulder pain from it. My hips often hurt after exercising as well, which I had previously put down to the bag, but I now think it's the exercise itself.
I wish I had a gym where you can rent a locker for your trainers and washbag then I'd only have clothes and towel to carry.
A rucksack wouldn't change anything, I've even been wondering about getting a trolley thing.
